Dear Mr. Matthews:

I am a xxx-xxx-year-old white woman from the coal mining country of NE Pennsylvania. I went to school in Philadelphia, and one of the minor things I've always enjoyed about your shows is your ever-so-distinct Philadelphia accent. It feels like home.

"Hardball" and "The Chris Matthews Show" have been constants in my life for such a long time. Even when I thought you were too obsequious in your coverage of George W. Bush (I will not use my nickname for him here, but its short version was "FF" -can you guess it?), I still watched you because your vast historical knowledge and your ability to conceptualize modern day events in terms of those in the past just made me happy.

In short, Mr. Matthews, this Jesuit-trained lawyer is a fan of yours.

But, you failed to do the right thing tonight, and I am so upset by what I witnessed that I am moved to write to you. When Dick Armey was so insulting and offensive to Joan Walsh (another person I think is quite wonderful), you were silent.

That was wrong. I was ashamed for you.

Bob Herbert was a man and said the right thing when he came on. He did, Mr. Matthews, what you should have done. I am writing this hoping - I believe in giving a disciple of Tip O'Neill the benefit of the doubt - that you were too stunned to have acted to defend Ms. Walsh and to have put Mr. Armey in his place.

He should never be on your program again. He contributed nothing except to make dismissive comments about politics, which was not exactly enlightening, and reflected badly on him, a man who spent a large part of his adult life in that very diminished (by him) profession. He is, in my opinion, worthless.

(I still remember his "slip of the tongue" when he called Barney Frank "Barney Fag." Mr. Frank was kinder to him than I would have been.)

Believe me, I hope nothing of the sort ever happens again, on your show or on any show. In the year 2009, it's absolutely impossible to believe that a dinosaur such as Armey had the incredible gall to make the cracks he did to Ms. Walsh. He was so far out of line as to be off the screen, which is exactly where he belongs.

Kudos to Bob Herbert, who quietly and calmly and correctly stated the situation as he - and just about everyone who watches you show - saw it. I hope Mr. Armey has the good sense to apologize to Ms. Walsh, but that does nothing to assuage my outrage. I went to law school when the professors had no hesitation to address us few female students as "lawyerettes." Can you imagine a daughter of yours enduring that sort of treatment today?

Mr. Armey is from that time. He should be banished to a museum of natural history where he can be viewed as the oddity he is, but he should never be given any kind of public platform again.

And I'm still a big fan of your shows, of you, and I shall remain so. Unless you have Dick Armey on again, without him having made a public apology to Ms. Walsh.

I sent the below to Hardball after watching the horrendous display with Dick Armey tonight.

Greetings,

I am very disappointed in the segment of Hardball tonight that included Dick Armey. Besides being a reactionary in his political partisan bias Armey is a misogynistic posterior of the elephant he claims as mascot - and in that he insults the pachyderm. I am a woman who has lived long enough to witness women's rights and opinions evolve from "being seen but not heard" to having our rightful place in the leadership and workplaces of this country. We are just now beginning to rise to positions that women have held, in what I realize are more civilized countries than ours, for years.

Armey's (he does not in my opinion deserve a title of respect of any sort) attitude and tone of condescension when talking to Joan Walsh were despicable and insulting not only to women but to every person containing the intelligence he obviously lacks. Rather than defend his position with thoughtful commentary he opted for insult and juvenile laughter much like a 7th grade boy trying to figure out how to react to a woman. I have so many choice things to say about him but refuse to stoop to his level of invective.

I am also very disappointed in you Chris. You have never shown a reluctance to fight back and bat down someone who has acted the way he did tonight, and yet you not only let him get away with his actions and comments, but even allowed him to get in his last word after you had told him it was done. As an experienced talk show host, who is very good at speaking over others when you choose, I am surprised and saddened that you allowed it to go on, and that you didn't require him to apologize, at the very least, for his comment about being so glad Ms. Walsh can never be his wife. . . I wonder how he would have addressed someone like Lawrence O'Donnell making similar points to him as she did. I am thankful he is no longer a member of Congress and only hope others like him are also voted out of office sooner rather than later - he gives the term Republican a bad odor.

I try to catch your show most every night. Tonight's show was one I wish I had missed. The segment with Dick Armey and Joan Walsh was utterly horrifying to watch. It was bad enough that he put down politicians repeatedly as if he's in a position to do so. It was worse when he rattled off ridiculous misinformation about our economic plight. But the hostile put-downs he slung at Joan Walsh were the worst.

On the one hand, it may be a good thing that he exposed himself for the obstructionist has-been that he is. But on the other hand, it would have been great to see you as the moderator step up to the plate and pull him off Ms. Walsh. He was out of line, and you should have called him on it. Ms. Walsh did an admirable job of defending her points when she could get a word in edgewise, but you seriously fell down on the job.

You've had your share of misfits on Hardball, but Dick Armey should never, never appear again. He's irrelevant and has no place in the public forum. And I'll bet he'll be one of Keith's Worse Persons. I doubt very much I'm the only person you'll hear from who was disgusted with Armey. And disappointed with you.

I must honestly say I have never, not once in my life (brief though these 26 years may be), felt the need to send an email in regards to a TV show. However, yesterday's edition of Hardball has shattered my silence.
Armey comported himself with the attitude, reasoning and intelligence of a 12 year old boy. And you are the teacher who, via silence, condones his actions.
If you do not apologize for your lack of response and moderation on YOUR show, you will have lost this viewer. If you allow Armey back on without his apology to Ms. Walsh, you will have lost this viewer.

trying to go through MSNBC web page and it was so difficult I gave up. I am totally disgusted and I want to let Matthews know that he was out of line to allow that go on without putting Armey down. Bob Herbert had to apologize; Matthews did not. I hardly ever turn the tv on until Keith and now I know why.
