When corporations have Millions of dollars at stake, spending ten percent of the loss on a Lawyer and winning is good business.
Client/Attorney privilege is there only to protect the Lawyer from lying, obfuscation or hiding facts. Occasionally, it may protect the client from a Shister Lawyer.
My family recently went through an ugly trust. Although it was small and simple, others decided to try and take it all through misrepresentation and fraud. When we discovered it, my partner was concerned that legal fees would decimate the assets of the estate. I pointed out that this was a gift from the Estate, and someone was trying to take it away against the wishes of the Trust. Why on earth would you be afraid to elicit a vigorous defense? It comes out of the trust, which will be depleted for the thief as well as yourself. I arbitrarily chose 10%-15% of the estate for legal fee's, and sure enough, 2 years later, it was settled, we were victorious, and the threatening party was left dragging his dick in the dirt. Forever pissed off of all the money he "Lost" by trying to take it all and failing.
Corporations do this every day, only they can afford teams of lawyers, and many times they deal with the health of millions of people that lose their products. To win, they will happily attempt to change laws or exert pressure on Senators who can influence the Laws of the land. We as individuals cannot do this, but large Corporations wield tremendous influence, especially since they are so large they can ruin segments of the economy overnight, and I don't doubt that they make this clear to government officials now and then.
