1. "Guitar Hero Culture." A brilliant insight.
Edited on Sat Mar-21-09 02:40 AM by tomreedtoon
Maher made important connections visible; the riot at the Top Model auditions, AIG, the trickle-down theory, and the one that will anger all the UAW posters here. "Here's a reality check: for the last four years, America's top model has been the Toyota Camry."

And beyond "Guitar Hero," he could have extended the metaphor to "Grand Theft Auto Syndrome," in which all those young guys pretend to be brazen thieves, rapists and murderers - when they don't have the courage or desperation to really be such people.

3. I normally don't like Maher, but he makes excellent points here.
The rich want to act as if the poor are foolish and wrong to want something for nothing or be unrealistic about what they can achieve--they imply that the only reason poor people don't have what rich people do is that they are lazy and don't want to work hard. But the fact of the matter is that a LOT of rich people got where they are without doing jack-anything. And now they have the nerve to sit on their high horses and ridicule the poor for being lazy slackers? While there are poor people slaving away every day and getting nothing for it?

It's asinine to think you can, or should, be getting ANYTHING for nothing. No matter who you are. And there are just some dreams that aren't realistic. If you have a tin ear, you're probably never going to be a great musician. If you aren't tall and thin and willing to stick your finger down your throat to stay that way, a conventional modeling career is probably not for you. And if you run a company into the ground, you should NOT expect a friggin' bonus for doing it.
