2. We need a link to that poll. Long ago liberal ministers marched beside
MLK jr. - I think this calls for some ministers and their congregations to stand up again. They should take over the food operation. Arresting ministers for feeding the hungry would get some attention.

3. Here's more on the story.....
"Under the ordinance, groups can only obtain two permits a year per park for the purpose of sharing food with a large group. Although the ordinance does not explicitly target the homeless, the guillotine falls on their heads, as they are largely the benefactors of churches, charities and activist groups serving free food in easily accessible parks."

"Orlando’s estimated 9,000 homeless people are subject to laws that prevent them from lying on benches and from panhandling during certain hours. Cleveland recently enacted a law that sets a 10 pm curfew at the city’s Public Square, intending to stop people from sleeping in the park."

"Just as Orlando is cracking down on free meals that make life more bearable for homeless people, so too are other cities. This month, West Palm Beach, Fla., passed a similar ordinance that criminalizes feeding the homeless in public places, and last week officials in Cleveland, Ohio, prohibited groups from sharing food in the city’s Public Square. In February, a man in Jacksonville, Fla., was given a citation for handing out food to the homeless without a permit, though it was later thrown out. And FNB says fear is spreading in Albuquerque, N.M., that city officials may pass a similar ordinance, which has long been an avenue used to force out homeless people."

14. Seldona...
I thought it was a Onion News clip at first?!?! Seriously, it like being arrested for feeding the bears at Yosemite?

I'm sorry, but I have to bring religion into this...All I hear down here in the deep south is how America is a Christian Nation...Well, if this were "REALLY" true then why do we not see massive Christian outrage over this? Why is it that the "godless ACLU" is the ones fighting for what Jesus said was the right thing to do?

I do not want to hear any Christian horse crap story about how "...not all Christians are like that" Well, get your Christian butt on the phone with your preacher and do something! Lets face it most Christians are more concerned about gays, scientific research, evolution being taught in public schools, and the list goes on and on, rather than helping the homeless, elderly, or disabled. The sad thing about those Christians that do help is they are SCARED to stand up to the majority and shove that F-ing book "The BIBLE" in their face and say "WHAT WOULD JESUS DO!"

I hope I do get kicked out of DU for exercising my free speech...This is not just free speech it is constructive criticism! From a godless heathen with absolutely no morals or care in life!

25. I believe it is the police,
and whatever city officials involved with the stupidity that is this policy, that are at fault here.

A lot of the organizations involved were probably religious in nature, though not all by any means. Personally I could care less what people choose to believe. Just as long as it isn't being legislated or taught in schools imo.

I just wish 'non-believers' had the same respect...

12. Watch the vid ..its a true outrage. They went undercover to bust him.

The ACLU should donate the legal time to examine this, call for a jury trial, and perhaps counter sue.

Orlando... only people with Disney/MGM passes allowed.

13. My brother was homeless in Santa Barbara, CA. before he died
three years ago. They passed a law that you couldn't sit on the sidewalks (or something like that) and somehow my brother got a hold of an actual pack of tickets ( when they were being arrested for camping the police left it behind...or one of the guys pick pocketed it!). So during the Summer Solstice parade my brother dressed up as a policeman and handed out tickets to people sitting on the curb. He was on the streets for 25 years and started out like this young guy fighting for the rights of the homeless before he ended up with them on the streets. He had a heart of gold.

Homeless People. It was horrible. It is part of why I have a fear and a concern about police. Some of them can be real A$$es.

17. Who would Jesus feed?
So, if the Christ came back and tried his fishes and loaves thing here then we would throw him in jail for feeding more than 35 people? Yup, this says a lot about this town and this nation alright.
This law against feeding people is a crime against humanity and another great example of how we have the wrong people running things in this country.
It is also a great example of why all laws barring people from meeting in large groups need to be shot down and stopped now. How can we as a nation and as a people get anything done if we have to have the governments permission to gather? How can we deal with disasters (and that is what this economic melt-down is) if we cannot just go outside our homes and gather?
Its just plain bullshit.
Remember common sense America? We used to have an abundance of it. Evidently they ran out of it in this town.

24. I voted for Obama
I am disgusted with the fact that there are so many people living in the streets. I wonder if and how this new administration will address this problem. That being said, I hope that people who want to feed homeless and hungry people will take this into consideration: Please protect the people you want to feed by accepting the extra challenge to take responsibility for the food that is given by getting these permits. If there is a limitation perhaps individuals can form a coalitionist chain and take turns getting the permits so food can be given more than twice a year. I have not heard of any groups being fed having been poisoned, but the potential is always there. Think about the woman who was recently in the news, poisoning baby food right in the super market. Homeless people are already so vulnerable. I know they would appreciate the fact that the good Samaritans who can afford to take the time and resources to relieve their suffering are willing to go a little further to ensure their safety as well.

Give a man a fish....

23. I believe it is the individual cities trying to take care of their homeless problems.
Edited on Sun Mar-22-09 10:14 PM by eagertolearn
They have been doing this for years. The wealthy "right" have been so brain washed about helpng anyone...."thats socialism...let them figure it out themselves...people need to get a job"...I've heard it all. Other countries are much better at this than we are same with health care. People need to wake up and not let themselves get brain washed and convinced that this is not everyone's problem. The homeless are people just like the rest of us!

WELCOME to DU!

21. Serve Pie in response
In my home town they passed an ordinance like the one in Orlando and the churches involved in feeding the homeless busted it and forced the city to repeal it. The ministers stood on the court house steps and served pie in defiance. It was repealed soon after. ;-)

But we still have harassment of our homeless population. They have camps in the woods and the police are always evicting them.
