Ladies and Gentlemen, The President of the United States.

President Barack Obama's press conference - March 24, 2009: The President responds to a question from CNN's Ed Henry.

Ed Henry was the correspondent in the incident when Robert Novak, in an interview segment with James Carville, walked off the set. He is also the reporter who was told by WH spokesperson Tony Snow, when pressing Snow about Bush's Iraq plans, to "zip it."

31. Where was this press when * was in office?
I don't have a problem with them actually asking real questions, but it is amazing that now that we have a guy who can actually accomplish something (and does), they keep trying to be "journalists". Bush got no questions of any value and these corporate idiots are complicit in his crimes.

Once, god forbid, another repuke occupies that office on stolen votes, or a supreme decision, we also know that these MEDIA WHORES will revert back to "see no evil", "hear no evil", "speak no evil" mode...

and, of course, don't forget, obama has had now more press conferences than bush* did in his entire term - at least it seems that way...don't forget for a second bush*s "statesments" WITYOUT TAKING ANY QUESTIONS format...

55. MSM didn't ask * tough questions because
a) they knew he couldn't answer them
b) he gave them all nicknames and they hoped he might offer to have a beer with them
c) it was well known that if anyone asked * a tough question they would never again be called on.
d) only shills like Jimmy/Jeff got called on.
e) all of the above

It has been EIGHT YEARS since we had a President who knew what he was talking about

and the newer correspondents have never experienced the phenomenon first hand.

36. Bush didn't allow it
Obama is comfortable enough to allow a short "follow up" in the sense of allowing a guy to express that he felt he hadn't gotten a complete answer. The person better be careful though because if Obama tried to do him a favor and skip the stupid part, he's only gonna be nice once.

And the other good line from the evening was "if it gets to my desk, it means it's one of the hard problems". This along with his conclusion about persistence sets up his administration very well. He won this race because he set good foundations and then worked them persistently. No, he did not "take out" Clinton with "one punch". But he did beat her, and he did so starting in '04 with a ground breaking, and ground laying speech. Then he made a foundation building policy speech about the war in Iraq. Then he built long and deep roots in the caucus states and leveraged his ability in Iowa to connect with individual voters. He avoided serious trouble with a "teaching moment" on the Rev. Wright fiasco. He undercut McCain with a serious and steady trip through Iraq and Afghanistan, finishing off with a tremendous speech in Berlin. This guy kills you with persistent competence. You could see it in the conference last night as he connected various questions together in his responses to each reporter. He's going to repeat, expand, reinforce, and move forward while you're still listening. He took down Jindal and he wasn't even there. He trivialized Rush, and by extension the entire GOP in one swift move. They are down to criticizing his choice in clothes, his teleprompter use, and his wife. And I fully suspect he will soon have Bayh and the Bluedogs on the run as well.

If there is a concern is it whether, when it comes to his policy, he's really right. If it's about competence, he's got that answered.

26. "I like to know what I'm talking about before I speak. All right?"
BAM! Implies dickhead Ed doesn't know what he's talkin bout before he opens his yapper (proven somewhat true over time) while also scoring a point in Obama's column - so he gets a 2-fer! Nice. Obama: 1 -- Henry: -1. Ouch. Negative numbers in your column are not good Ed.

Dude, this is your chance to ask the president a question on live tv in primetime and that was the best you could come up with? Typical GOP attack style bullshit (not saying he's GOP but is their style) to try and fire up emotion while not covering ANYTHING having to do with policy. Glad Obama shot that down - like a marksman! A real beauty to watch. :)

29. When I saw this at like 3 in the morning.....
I work 7PM to 7AM, and we have CNN on in a room of 4 or 5 guys. We get busy and don't always hear every thing the first second or even third time through. So It was about three in the morning when I heard this, and since I pretty much tune out the chattering class, it was as if I was hearing it live.

My immediate thought was (in the President's voice) continuing his statement - "yeah I know you guys haven't been used to that around this house fro the last eight years. But get used to it. That is what the President is supposed to act." Now admittedly, my thoughts are exactly why I am not a politician, but I know President Obama was sending that message, and I LOVED it.

and didn't get an answer, I knew he'd go after it like a starving hyena going after a dead elephant.

When the question came the second time, I sat there and thought...hmmm...I wonder what Obama will say to this....

His reply was nothing short of perfection

And like someone else mentioned in this thread, he didn't even have to say, "Unlike a person in the previous administration..."

We all know the implication was there

I guess the "Press Corps" will be a little more careful from now on about asking snarky questions they wouldn't have DARED to ask Bush.

42. A beautiful double-entendre, perfectly executed, and hit right out of the park.
As someone else said, "why didn't anyone ask Bush why he sat on his ass in that classroom?" Because our press has no backbone and because they were complicit in the Bush/Cheney crimes. Obama's snub at their annual dinner the other night was also very classy. Finally we have a president who actually represents "we the people" and the jackals in the press can't stand it.

54. And Ed (the weasel) says:
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/03/25/henry.obama/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- The most amazing part of the exchange to me is that I didn't go into the East Room intending to ask President Obama about AIG.

After frantic preparation for the prime-time newser with several colleagues, especially lead CNN White House producer Tim McCaughan, I had several provocative questions in my pocket.

But none of them had much to do with the financial crisis because I assumed several of my colleagues would exhaust the topic of AIG before my turn came up.

<snip>

I was heading into this event with the same strategy: make news on something unexpected (I won't tell you which topics I was working on cause it would ruin the surprise for a future presser or interview with the president).

This is the crap that passes for journalism now a days, I guess. Obama of course was spot on with his reply and he rightfully took Eddie to the woodshed.

My take is; I like when Obama does this. America can actually see that Obama is not a punk as some of his critics would like people to believe. It gives Obama so much more credibility and shows that he cannot be messed with.
