9. Conservative South Carolinians take pride in not spending dick on public education.

They view public schools as for blacks, and all whites should send their kids to lily-white private schools. Conservative white Southerners are so addled with racism that they will do anything to try and keep blacks from getting ahead, even if that means doing worse themselves. They will not see that when we all get ahead, we ALL get ahead.

I don't live in SC but I do live about an hour away from it and I'd say it's an anti-intellectual thing more than a race thing. Of course race plays into it, but mostly any fancy book learnin' is suspect and ridiculed.

11. South Carolina ranked 41st in the country based on national reading and math scores,

high school graduation rates and the results of Advanced Placement exams. And SC ranks 44th for equity in funding of schools across the state. Remember the young girl who wrote to Obama about her crumbling school? The governor says she can just rot in that decrepit building.

I guess the governor is shooting for a rank of 50th.
