Bad News: apparently no Young Turks on MSNBC right now. I'm not a fan of Ed.

Extra highlights: Keith calls himself "the A-hole".

1. I think he'll appeal to the folks that might not love Keith or Rachel as much as we do

He comes across as 'the neighbor from down the block' - and I think it benefits the entire channel when they branch out into markets that aren't the same

2. I'm not a fan of his either.
Too much like Limbaugh for my tastes.

I would of preferred Cenk and would of cheered Tom Hartmann.

5. He's nothing like Limbaugh.
Limbaugh is an elitist, Ed is a populist. He cares about the little guy. On his radio show he talks to all kinds of people and holds his own. He is, as they were saying, a really good addition to the team because of where he is coming from (Fargo, mid-western, dirt under the fingers values), and because he's got fire in him.

Ed is also a small business owner--has some sort of construction business with one of his sons. The other son is a pro golfer. The only thing he has in common with Limbaugh is a certain similarity in their voices. But that's where it stops.

He's got the best political rant out there. It's a good time slot for him--early enough for the working people who go to bed earlier. The 10:00 slot would not have been as good.

Now I can totally cancel the xm radio subscription--he was the last reason I had to hold out, and now he'll be on the teevee.

14. Don't misread my post.
Given my choice I'd pick ANY professed liberal over another Repiggy but this guy isn't my first, 2nd or even third choice.

15. that's ok.
As a few of us mid-westerners were saying in this thread, he's a guy that people around here will identify with. He sounds like my repub dad, except for the actual words he's saying. His tone, his moral outrage is the same except he's on the left and my dad is on the right. That's why he will appeal.

3. so they move Shuster to 3-5 slot
frankly I like Shuster better than Ed Schultz. BUT: Schultz will do a good job. Shuster deserves better. Maybe the 10pm slot. If they don't give it to Cenk.

4. I love Cenk, but were the Young Turks even in the running?
You could tell they were testing out Ed Schultz because he subbed in for various hosts over a period of weeks.

And, while I'm not a huge fan of Big Ed, he does have a good radio persona/personality.

6. he came across to me as really likeable with Keith.
He'll be a good counter-balance to the others. I'm from the mid-west so maybe that's why I "get" him. We need more than just people to appeal to the East and West Coasts. This should be really good for MSNBC--maybe they'll steal some of those centrists away from FOX.

9. I think the mid-west thing is correct Ginny
I am from Chicago and he comes across just like people I talk to every day. While I like Thom Hartmann very much, sometimes liberals can get a bit too cool and cerebral to appeal to large cross sections of America. I think Ed has the appeal of an everyday American who is sick and tired of the imbalance between the rich and middle class in this country, he is sick and tired of the working people getting the short end of the stick in our country and can speak directly to the American people, even those that aren't on the liberal/Democratic bandwagon as of yet. Thinking about it now, why is it that we always talk about the rich and the middle class but the poor is rarely if ever mentioned. It just makes me all the more sad to think about what happened to John Edwards.

16. I think Ed does have that appeal as well
Even though I'm a northeastern liberal elitist, I can see why a lot of people like Ed. He's too conservative for me, but he does come across as very likeable and down-to-earth on the radio.

7. I love Cenk
and I would have loved to have seen him in that slot, but I also love Big Eddie and I listen to him and Thom Hartmann every day, talk about the ends of the Democratic spectrum. I think Ed will be good in this slot and am very much looking forward to it.

19. You didn't see TYT written up in the L.A. Times, Politico, HuffPo, S.F. Chronicle, etc.?
Edited on Thu Apr-02-09 07:46 PM by ihavenobias
Here: , , , and the .

Also, if you read the AP story announcing that the 10pm slot has been put on hold, they only quoted ONE talk show host (yes, it was Cenk).

In other words, yes, they were (are) in the running. It's just that Ed has been on their radar for a long time while Cenk is new (to them). They need to see how Ed works out before they consider adding ANOTHER brand new show. And if you're still not convinced that Cenk is on their radar, I would point out that he's been on 1600 Penns. Ave a couple of times. Here is with Jane Hamsher of Firedoglake.

PS---The latest TVNewswer industry poll is encouraging as well. And for the record, while I'm not in Ed's target audience, I'm excited about his ability to reach left leaning Republicans and other centrists/moderates. I won't be watching his show because it's not my thing, BUT I'm glad he has a show.

20. Thanks
I must have been oblivious. I've seen Cenk have his own stories in Huffington Post, I think.

I'm glad he's under consideration as well.

8. i don't like ed all the time
but he's good enough.

He does seem to really care and he IS a populist.

I would have preferred TYT, but Ed is not a bad choice.

10. This is great news!!!
We need more strong voices out there. Keith has the best show ever. While I love Rachel and glad she has her own show. I cant seem to watch it. I think she is the best when she is sitting with a group of people giving her views and opinions cuz she is so smart and knows the facts. She can put anyone in their place. But her show itself is hard for me personally to watch.

Good luck Ed

11. I can't wait for Monday to see his first show!
I agree with you on Rachael. I know that she is very smart and knows her stuff, but the tone of her show puts me off. I would like to see her co-anchor a show so she'd have someone to play off of--to be the resident expert to the other person's more "everyman" viewpoint.

Keith is the angry liberal, hating all things conservative, hypocritical and phony. Ed will be the populist speaking out for the average guy.

13. This is a good move on MSNBC's part
I've listened to ED on the radio and though I don't always agree with him, he has a lot of appeal. I just feel badly for Shuster. I really enjoy his show. Now that he's moving to an earlier time slot, hopefully I'll never have to listen to Contessa Brewer again.

18. I haven't always agreed with Ed
but he did allow all the candidates who wanted to to come on his show--even held fundraisers to pay their way--my man Kucinich was the first one to take him up on the offer, and Ed was respectful and let Dennis talk and get his points across. For that alone, I know he is a decent guy and will make a great addition to the TV airwaves.

Do you think he'll keep his radio show?

22. He's earned it
The man wisely avoided AAR and built his own audience, independent of the imbecile that is Mark Green.

He's the last man standing.
Not my pick, but Ed's a good guy from my limited encounters with him, a real labor advocate and his heart's in the right place.
I wish him well.
