Terry Nelson's law-enforcement career spanned three decades. It included service in the US Border Patrol, the US Customs Service, and the Department of Homeland Security, taking him beyond US borders into Mexico, Central America, and South America. In various capacities he acquired first-hand knowledge of the "War on Drugs," being directly involved in counter-narcotics missions. He labored with distinction, even receiving special Congressional recognition for his work. "But," he says, "as the 'War on Drugs' went on and on I never saw any visible progress - and only limited discussion about the lack of progress. Something was wrong with this picture." Terry came to understand drug prohibition was doing more harm than good and that the United States needed a major policy change." For many years he had thought a lot about decriminalizing drugs but had not wanted to go so far as to legalize them. But the obvious lack of progress toward winning the war and the continued congratulatory backslapping unrelated to even incremental successes have made him conclude that enough is enough. Perpetuating the "War on Drugs" myth is dangerous to the well-being of the planet and lethal to future generations. Terry has decided the only solution is a policy of legalized regulation of all drugs. That decision led to his joining LEAP - the first group he has ever joined! "We must remove the criminal element from the drug trade, because it is destroying our society and crippling governments to the south of us. We must change the rules to win the real war."

Terry retired in 2005 as a GS-14 Air/Marine Group Supervisor. He is a veteran of the U.S. Coast Guard, having served as a communications specialist in Vietnam, Thailand, and the Philippines. He served 9 years in the U.S. Border Patrol including a stint as Instructor and the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, 3 years in marine operations in the Florida Keys, 1 year a Customs Inspector at DFW Airport, 7 years as an Air Interdiction Officer/Criminal Investigator, 2 years as Staff Officer to Director of Foreign Operations and 5 years on the staff of Field Director (SSB East) Surveillance Support Branch East. During this period SSBE team participated in the seizure of over 230,000 pounds of Cocaine and received the United States Interdiction Committee award for interdictions.

"But to what avail - today drugs are cheaper, more potent, and far easier for our children to get than at the beginning of the war."

12. I suppose it is in the realm of possibility that Nelson has
tried the stuff. I would think anyone working in this area would like to know what they are dealing with.

2. I'm meeting more people in law enforcement lately
who are starting to realize the illegality is the problem, not the drugs themselves.

The drug war has been a spectacular failure, actually increasing the supply of black market drugs, increasing their danger, and gutting the Fourth Amendment.

Don't get me started on all the lives wasted by incarceration for drug offenses.

The only way to break the gangs here and abroad is end the drug war, make drugs safe, available and cheap, and kill their income.

Anybody who wants to do drugs can get them now. There would be little to no increase in the number of people experimenting. There would be an increase in resources we could apply to constructive things were we not flushing it down the DEA rathole.

It's time to end the war. We lost it the day we started it.

3. We are slow to learn.....
It's time to legalize marijuana. I'm not so sure about cocaine and heroin, etc...but give me a break! I smoked marijuana for years. I haven't smoked it for many, many more. Yes, I have a desire to try it again from time to time, but NOT an addiction. I know it made me confused and goofy as a loon, and of course paranoid. But I can tell you of several times when I was shit faced drunk, and some of those times I managed to get behind the wheel of a car. THAT was deadly and stupid. I don't have to depend on wheels any longer, but the point is: alcohol is MUCH MORE DANGEROUS than marijuana ever dreamed of being.

We have our heads up our asses on this issue. Of course the "righteous" and dim witted will fight it all the way, but the same morons fought the legalization of alcohol too. I don't think we still have gun battles in Chicago over distribution of alcohol. Correct me if I'm wrong?

4. also notice 2 generations of anti smut, strong morality
esp. anti gay, anti abortion and anti crime type policies have basically made those issues clearly thought of in liberal terms by the majority of the population who were constantly subject to the propaganda promoting the very opposite! In Other Words; MORE CRIME=MORE POLICE! Gettit? MORE PORN= MORE MOARLIST OUTRAGE! MORE OUTRIGHT GAY LIFESTYLES = MORE VIOLENTLY HOMOPHOBIA!
Hmmmmm...
MORE DRUGS and streetcrimes = MORE LAWS FOR MORE COPS TO CONTROL MORE CITIZENS with LESS civil rights?
HUMAN RIGHTS VIOLATIONS=HUMAN RIGHTS TRIBUNALS!
MORE BUSHIT= MORE REACTIONARKY TALK RADIO!
I SEE! said the blind man...

5. How refreshing to hear someone with so much credibility on the subject
speak in such a straightforward and honest manner. I'm so sick of all the emotional blackmail and verbal bating that goes on.

I find it very interesting that this issue is suddenly taking off now. People who don't even partake (such as myself) are speaking out.

I've very happy this is in the dialog.

8. the guys with the right stuff tell the truth
In drug enforcement they tell the truth, they know keeping drugs illegal is not helping this country one iota.

But they are the guys without the power, lobbyists are the power-brokers who are helping to keep these insane laws in force, and ruining generations of young men and women.
