I realize many here are concerned about immigration, especially h1b's. However, as a Latino, I get really tired of a bunch of people getting self-righteous about Latino immigration. Why she would be treated differently than any other immigrant, because unlike India or Europe or China, Uncle Sam came to our lands and TOOK them. I speak of Puerto Rico, but considering the Mexican War, it could also be said of Mexico, where people are being kept out of places like Los Angeles. He also did his best to make sure Latin America is a basket case, so bad that people like Hugo are just beginning to try to clean up the mess (and the jury is still out whether they have a shot.) By the way, I say this as one of Puerto Rican descent, which means that my Family never needed a green card. I will also admit that while there is always some part of me that likes the idea of independence, I realize that it would be very easy to exchange a boss in Washington for one in Havana or Caracas.
Besides that, unlike many people who think they understand prejudice, we Latinos have an appreciation for some Anglo-Saxon virtues some Gringos are very willing to junk, such as the idea that all are equal under the law, and that people willing to work hard should have at least a fair shot of making a decent living and having a good standard of living for their family. At the risk of offending some of you, I can say that while there are some Latinos who indeed are villains, many of us actually have a greater appreciation and understanding of this country than many WASP's do. That is why we vote a lot, and that is why so many activists happen to be Latino. You may find we make good allies if you give us a chance.
