Susan Boyle is making the news big time so I hope this posting conforms to guidelines. She's a really terrific singer and she recorded this song in 1999 for charity! The CD sold 1,000 copies.

Hope everyone enjoys this.

The way she breaks stereotypes is almost a political statement in itself.

And for those 3 people who haven't yet seen her appearance on "Britain's Got Talent 2009" here's the Youtube link to her singing "I DREAMED A DREAM".

13. She sounds a lot like Streisand in places on this cut.
If she is out of nowhere and recorded this in 1999 for charity, how did she get the orchestral accompaniment? I wonder if this one is for real. Sorry, but she manages certain tones just like Streisand. There is an uncanny similarity. She gets away from it at other times. Just saying.

23. When you see those young clips of Streisand on the Judy Garland Show, for example...
it's almost as if the baton is being passed.

And give Judy credit for enjoying it and knowing talent when she saw it.

Ella's looks held her out of 'main stream' music for quite a while.

Ella's career went from '35, at age about 20, until her death in '96. In '42, she got a recording contract.

24. She has been on a few of the talk shows today and I saw her sing part of the same song without music
and she still had perfect tone. I saw in another article today that the CD that she sang on in 1999 was for a benefit and she was one of the non professionals piked to sing a song (Cry Me a River). They only made 1,000 CD's and this article was saying that they will be a hot number now (those who bought them have a treasure). She is for real and it is great that she has finally been discovered by the world!

48. Yes, her sense of pitch when singing a capella is amazing.
I think that comes from singing in church choir a lot. I bet she started singing very early in her life -- in church.

38. It's real--Times Online just issued a story about it:
Susan Boyle recording of Cry Me A River uncovered

A recording made ten years ago by the unlikely Britain’s Got Talent sensation Susan Boyle has been uncovered.

The sudden singing star’s spokeswoman confirmed this morning that an emotional recording of Cry Me A River which hit YouTube late last night is the 48-year-old Scot.

She reportedly covered the blues ballad for a charity album in 1999, partly funded by the tiny Whitburn Community Council in West Lothian, where she lives. Only 1,000 copies of the CD were pressed.

47. She's singing to a tape
And I'm guessing it's Streisand's arrangement, with Bab's voice stripped out. That's why it sounds so familiar. I played the hell out of The Barbra Streisand album when I was a teen. Ms. Boyle was probably as influenced by La' Streisand as I was.

So now I'm yet again engulfed in tears. Thanks for posting that.

Be it whatever it is, Susan Boyle's triumph cuts to the marrow. If it's a "distraction," it is one I very much needed at this time, in this place. I never blasted through the wall of "not looking the part" and that she *has* fills my heart with such INCREDIBLE JOY!!!

Tante K. in her former life with her "not-quite-right" look.

Ella's is smokier, jazzier, and more practiced, while Boyle's has a clean but very soulful quality to it.
