I didn't know that Keith showed that clip until just now, he and Janeane Garofalo also make a couple of good comments about it and the real reason these people got together.

opinion. Props to them both!

11. Yeah it was straight up racism
Dick Kay who is a long time Chicago political reporter has a great radio show every Saturday here in Chicago and who is not one to froth at the mouth and use much hyperbole said today the same thing. This tea party thing was complete racism at it's core. I know it is funny the whole teabagging thing but unfortunately I think this could eventually lead to some crazy, unhinged person doing something really stupid and bad to our president. I really hope and if I prayed I would pray that it doesnt come to that but I really do see it going that way. For all of us I hope it doesnt.

8. Thanks for posting the video. And I agree 100% with Janeane's comments.
I had a feeling of deja vu watching all this teabagging nonsense. It reminded me so much of the Palin-McCain (yes, in that order) rallies.

9. I don't quite agree with Ms. Garofalo
There were a lot of racists at those parties who don't accept the idea of a black president, but to call this racism "straight up" is wrong.

What is most disturbing is that almost everybody at the protests is misinformed about something. The idea behind these anti-tax rallies is the silly notion that all taxation is counterproductive and that all government spending is waste (unless it's defense spending). This was the simplified version of voodoo economics used to sell it to the masses in the 1980s and 1990s. To be sure, there was a racist appeal in that sales pitch, with the black welfare queen serving as the caricature of the undeserving recipient of tax dollars. However, the idea that taxes take away money from businesses that could be used to employ workers was also a selling point and one that is a little harder to refute than the image of the welfare queen, which was largely just a few anecdotes amplified to look like a bigger problem than it was or continues to be. Rush Limbaugh focuses on this point, which contains a grain of reason, as much or more than he focuses on the nonsense that any Afro-American who holds a job, even if he is president of the United States or a pro quarterback, wouldn't have that job if it weren't for federally mandated quotas or affirmative action.

Since the simplified economic line is at least partly rational, it is the one that can be attacked. The fact is that government does not survive without revenue. Even if federal spending is reduced to a bare bones national defense, taxation is necessary to support that. So, teabaggers, shut up and eat your spinach.

The way to fight back against this kind of willful ignorance is to focus on facts and rational arguments. That would really reduce these tax protests to little more than a Klan rally dressed up to be taken out. Unfortunately, those people will always be with us.

12. Yep...straight up!

So they waited until a black man was elected to protest. Or are taxes just now counterproductive?

"Taxes" was an excuse for angry white people to voice their opposition to smarty pants, not even an American, Muslim terrorist who's not like us Obama. Racism.

I'm surprised by the people who don't recognize it when they see it.

14. Dissenting
While I believe racism has a lot to do with it, it isn't the only thing.

So they waited until a black man was elected to protest. Or are taxes just now counterproductive?

No, they thought taxes were counterproductive when they voted for Reagan, too. They thought taxes were counterproductive when they voted for Bush the Preppy and then Bush the Frat Boy. They thought taxes were counterproductive when they voted for Gingrich Republicans in 1994.

Ask yourself this: would there have been tea parties to protest similar policies put forth by President Hillary Clinton? or President John Edwards? or President Chris Dodd? or President Dennis Kucinich? I think the answer to that is, to quote Sarah Palin, you betcha.

No one can honestly say how many of the tea baggers are simply resentful of an Afro-American president because they would be afraid of any Democrat in the White House, if only because Rush Limbaugh tells them to be.

18. I agree. It's sheepism "straight up", not racism.
They would be out there against Hillary Clinton just as they were against Bill Clinton, because Fox News told them to.

The racial element is there, but I don't think it's predominant in this case.

Wasn't the group behind the tea parties formed over a year ago? Meaning, no matter what Democrat got into the White House, they would have been having these tea parties.

I thought that Garafolo's segment (even though she was right on several points) didn't really belong on the show.
It was just as bad as if someone went on Hannity and ranted about Liberals only protest because they are America hating socialist.
We should avoid this type of commentary..Even if it may be true.

QUEEN was taking THEIR money - they USE and have used even back during rayGUN, the EXCUSE of taxes to hide THEIR RACISM!!!

How fantastic was he?? He OWNED and PWNED those idiots. That was simply majestic!

And Keith and Janeane were both surprised that there were still so many racists around. Very few people of color would be even the slightest bit surprised.

17. what have we become
I don't favor the direction all this is heading
American against American and the media just loves to flaunt it.
I fear there is a great storm brewing in our midst.
It doesn't have to be this way, only if you participate it will.
Cool, calm rational heads is whats needed here
Not divisive,Inflammatory & sensational rhetoric
I know a lot of you like red meat but i think looking back at this clip
it will be something we could regret getting behind.
So flame me if you will for finding this clip no different than the divisive
hate filled dramatics found at FOX.
Stooping to their level is lowering the bar in my opinion

28. After you have been "turning the other cheek" for DECADES, you begin to RUN OUT OF CHEEKS!!!!
Being "nice" and all would be great if the other side would respond to it - BUT WE HAVE TRIED THIS FOR OVER FORTY YEARS NOW, AND IT DOESN'T WORK!!!!

WE have tried nice and we get "democrat party" from the fucking WAR CRIMINAL occupying OUR White House! in speech after SPEECH!

At some point - and that point was LAST NOVEMBER, we all say "ENOUGH!!!"

Just like Obama courageously tried reaching out his hand in "bipartisanship" time after time - HE CONSISTANTLY GOT HIS HAND BIT OFF!!!

And it's not what "we" have become - it's what THEY - THOSE PEOPLE as they like to call US - that have "become"!!!

Race baiters are just as disgusting as racists.

This was about being pissed off about taxes and spending but keeping quiet for eight years because they were loyal Bush followers.

I guarantee Janeane would be calling them a bunch of sexists if Hillary had won.

it was a wild accusation. Some of the more blatantly honest Republicans admit that is the real issue here. I've heard them on voice chat in forums and on the radio. There is no justification for their position as President Obama has made it abundantly clear most Americans will get a tax cut. So when their position is proved bogus then only remainder explanation is most likely.

that some racists used this as an excuse to get out to be critical of President Obama and on the other hand I think some people have been shocked into action by the scam that was/is the bail out.

The bail out was opposed by the citizens of the United States at a ratio of 100:1 yet it passed and in poor form. Some may feel they have no real representation from either of our main political parties.

I'm not sure about what the turnout was like. I know it was by RSVP only so they wanted to control the crowd. It's the teabag party where michael steele was allowed to participate. I guess that says something about republicans and segregation.
