His initial (fake) outrage at the question led him to say, "how long do we have to pay for slavery?". That clearly = racism, in my opinion...

3. It reminds me of an episode of Becker, though
The man mentioned three programs, and you and I might have little doubt who he was thinking about in the context of those programs, but it was actually the videographer who connected those programs to black people.

In the Becker episode, Becker had complained about foreign cab drivers and his neighbor cooking food on a BBQ in front of the apartment building. Becker denies he was being racist. The guy accusing him says, "Yes you are. You complain about foreigners and Puerto Ricans." Becker starts to defend himself and says, "Wait a minute. What Puerto Ricans?" The accuser starts to hem and haw, and Becker says, "No, no, no. I didn't say anything about Puerto Ricans, I said I hate it when my neighbors barbeques on the sidewalk! YOU decided he was Puerto Rican! Well guess what? He isn't. You're the racist!"

6. Was there a shortage of tape?
I'm just saying that the videographer jumped the gun. If the goal was to allow the subject to show us how stupid he is, then surely he would have done it without the videographer being the one to connect the three programs to black people.

The thing I found most interesting was when asked who he voted for, the subject said, "O..... what difference does it make?" He appeared to have been about to say "Obama".

10. Yeah, I was a bit surprised when he just came out and asked it like that
However, his rant about continuing to pay for slavery was the only part put in the original report "http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SJk52ylI3wU">Tea Party Paranoia in Cleveland", if I remember correctly. At least he's being honest and open by posting the whole encounter so people can see the context of that rant and make their own minds up...

5. He's "not mad yet", he "hasn't kicked the shit out of you."
Amazing. The guy claims to be disabled and living off veteran's benefits, doesn't pay taxes and thinks that the money Obama's spending has something to do with AFDC which he resents because he's tired of paying for slavery.

If he's healthy enough to contemplate kicking someone's ass maybe he's healthy enough to get a job. After all, we're tired of paying for Viet Nam. (insert sarcasm emoticon)

13. I agree. Terrible interview
If you are active on this discussion board, especially during the last election, you have seen some real examples of racism. This is definitely not the case. I think that the person interviewing did an awful job and must have really needed some material for his "best of racist protestors" collection. He just threw out the "So you hate black people, don't you!" comment from out of the blue. Don't get me wrong, this did seem like low hanging fruit, with the misspelled protest sign, American Flag waving and Good Ole boy uniform. But let's be fair now, you can't always judge a book by its cover. Throwing statements out there actually make the interviewer look bad, not the guy being interviewed. Pretty tactless IMHO.

18. How exactly was that "how long do we have to keep paying for slavery"
comment not racist? Especially when coupled with "how long do we keep paying before they get out and take care of their own families?" Who the hell did you think the "they" in that sentence was?

This is a racist fuck. There's no reason to make excuses for him.

Regards

19. After watching the video a couple of times, the interview was more on target than I thought
I do agree with you. I guess the interviewer just picked up on the signs without the guy actually spelling it out. So, in short, I stand corrected.

14. Let me get this straight...
Edited on Wed Apr-22-09 07:45 AM by rasputin1952
This clown is injured, on disability, and vet compensation, yet has the "energy" to "kick your ass". Perhaps some of that energy should be used in working. Plenty of jobs don't require a lot of physical energy, but do require mental accuity...oh, that's out.

So, while our taxes pay for this guy to stay in his home, he is willing to deny a home to others? Talk about wanting to kick somebody's ass!

Where was this clod when bush's buddies looted the Treasury and gave us monumental debt through all kinds of chicanery? The war in Iraq has cost us more than this idiot can dream of...what a jerk.

16. What was ironic to me was
that he was complaining of government programs and yet he is benefiting from them. Oh, I know in his mind he "earned" that disability check, and I won't argue that he earned his veteran's benefits. I would have preferred if the blogger had asked him if he felt that programs like SSD and veteran's benefits should be stopped--then go into the fact that Bush cut veteran's benefits and was the person who caused us to get into the mess we're in today. Also, SSD folks are to get a $250 tax incentive--ask if he will be giving his back.

17. Do we have a single standard here?
The guy is probably on public assistance. He probably has racial animosity. And we don't think he's very bright.

That describes a lot of people.

I really hate being put in this position.

20. That's why I wish the other questions had been addressed to him
because they would have been personalized to him. When he said he was on disability, the first thing I would have asked is SSI or SSD. The former goes to people who have not paid the max into FICA, the latter for those who have. I would have then said that my husband is on SSD, and he feels like he earned it because he paid into FICA since he was 12. I'm sure the chap would have agreed with me. My next question would have been--well, what do we do about SSD? If we don't want taxes raised, one way to get government out of debt is to abolish FICA and the SS benefits. Is he for that? I would have made him think, which to my mind is far more valuable than a "gotcha" moment. I have had conversations with folks like this, in the flesh and online, and have been able to keep it polite and we have both gone away learning something.
