2. While seeing her, I recalled Wesley Clark using the term "stovepipe".
Now it is finally being revealed. Rachel Maddow is discussing the newly released memo that shows that torture was happening on multiple levels. It was a program. It went from Washington, to the outskirts of government. It started at the top.

I don't like it but in this current mess it would be justice, or at least balance.

56. No one is getting a pass at this point!
At least not yet. There has been some very clever lawyering in statements so far, and basically there will be little cover under those statements. We need to see more of what remains secret to judge the real implications of the statements to date by the new, elected Executive Branch.

6. Why didn't these heroes??!!
Karpinsky makes a great point. She said, and I'm paraphrasing, "Where were these heroes (Rumsfeld and Cheney) 5 years ago when these soldiers were arrested. Why didn't they stand up and say the only did what was ordered." Or, in other words, why didn't they man up and take responsibility.

I think that was my favorite part of the video.

She got demoted, people under her command were jailed and their lives ruined.

Yet, Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Adington, Yoo et al are still free.

Wow! That was moving. The tone of her voice and her delivery is as powerful as her message.

And it's about time!

I have a bumper sticker on my pick up truck. Many, actually, but this one says:

BUSH APPROVED THE TORTURE

It's five years old and faded to the point of being hard to read. So I've been spreading this message on the road for five years and it's nice that the MSM has finally discovered what all of us in the DU community knew all this time.

We knew these days would be coming. There is so much more that needs to be done. Now is not the time to let up the pressure, gang! We the people can make these bastards pay for wrecking both our country and especially what our country stands for.

47. Independent and international investigation
I originally wanted Congress to investigate the hell out of this, but I'm becoming more and more convinced that would be a mistake. If it's done in Congress, the idiot repukes will make it political. They'll have a forum for yelling, "You're criminalizing a policy dispute!" "This is just revenge against the previous administration!" or maybe worse "We needed to torture. 9-11, 9-11, 9-11!"

I think we need a mini-Nuremburg. Somewhere in the land, there must be 5 or 6 honest Republicans and conservatives who hate torture and war crimes. Maybe some judges or prosecutors like the ones Rove/Bush fired for having integrity. I hadn't even thought about the international aspect of this until I watched this video.

As much as I love some of our Congressional dems, imho, this is not a job for Congress.

58. Can we trust a "Shoplifter" who was demoted by Bush?
Researching who we are listening to here, so Wikipedia:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Janis_Karpinski

"On April 8, 2005 Karpinski was formally relieved of command of the 800th Military Police Brigade. On May 5, 2005, President Bush approved Karpinski's demotion to colonel from the rank of brigadier general. Her demotion was not officially related to the abuse at Abu Ghraib prison. The allegations against her were for dereliction of duty, making a material misrepresentation to investigators, failure to obey a lawful order and shoplifting. Military sources alleged that Karpinski had been arrested in 2002 on MacDill Air Force Base for stealing cosmetics, but Karpinski has denied the arrest took place."

Some of us are too terse (after 23,000 posts, LOL) to do the :sarcasm: thingie.

Some things on DU we all know. See above response.

On edit: One hanging insinuation in my post is that she was set up and demoted because of her position. My point in putting this in the mix was to point to yet a further ramification, that she was possibly punished by Bush/Cheney as part of the torture cover-up.

The list of crimes may still be beyond our reasonable ability to forsee, since we are not the perps!

63. Enemy Combatants that are Tortured opens another can of worms.

Who, or how many people were transported to other countries using the term “Enemy Combatants” then tortured? I have heard as many as 32 people have died as result to torture. Some Enemy Combatants would be on record but if know one asks it will never come to light how many.

If that is done, this leads from the soldier on the ground, to their general, right into the White House.

It is getting harder and harder to believe we can even look forward until justice is served for our very recent past. It's not like this happened hundreds of years ago. Not even decades.

*sigh
