12. He thinks it has to be warm for plants to grow...
Edited on Mon Apr-27-09 12:52 PM by AlbertCat
and he's right about it being warmER in Antarctica over 65 million years ago (but he probably also thinks the Earth is only 6000 years old) And that is because the continents were not in the same place and sea currents were different and brought a warmer climate to the Antartic...like the Gulf Stream does now to Europe.

His point was to be snarky "It wasn't piped there"

You'll note he didn't ask how it got under the desert in the Middle East. That was once a lush jungle but is now a baking desert. Care to be snarky about rising temps now Senator Know-nothing?

Interestingly, these stupid questions also bring forth the fact that everything is interconnected and extremely complicated and the Oceans, being 2/3s of the planet, play a key role in many things that are seemingly unrelated (to dopes who don't get science). Points which SUPPORT climate scientists predictions and indeed what we are seeing now with outrageous winter and summer storms, flooding, huge and many hurricanes and typhoons. It just doesn't slowly get hot, y'know.

Clueless buffoon.

2. I'll tell you what he was thinking.
His argument is:

1) oil comes from plant material
2) at one time, there were a lot more plants, and it was warmer
3) therefore, it was warm "up there" and now it's cold
4) Therefore, global warming is just Natural Cycles(tm)!11!!!!!1
5) climate change is just a bunch of dirty fucking hippies! QED

Clearly, he completely failed to take continental drift into account. To say nothing of the logical fallacy that previous climate change somehow invalidates anthropomorphic climate forcing.

So yes, he proudly posted evidence that he is a know-nothing up on you-tube.

9. Put far better than I would have.

Those were my guesses as well as to the point he was trying to make, or thought he made. I too employ the 'let the person reach the conclusion themselves through questions' method of approaching debate (I am sure there is an actual name for the technique, just don't know it), but this was a piss poor attempt from an ignorant and rank amateur.

5. It wasn't even a good attempt at being confusing
It is obvious that the congresscritter doesn't understand plate techtronics or he would have understood that millions of years ago Alaska was a lot closer to the equator and was a lot warmer, naturally. A few millions years from now, Los Angeles will sink into the sea and San Francisco will be on an Alaskan cruise.

If Mrs. Bachmann had been there, she no doubt would have chimed in that the earth isn't millions of years old, but only about six thousand. I don't know if Mr. Barton believes that, but if he does, that could be what he thinks is a "zinger."

14. Lol! "Techtronics"... good one!
Writing an entire anti-AGW article full of terms like 'insulation', 'plate techtronics', 'thermo-haly current', and other misconstructions would be hilarious.

4. It certainly did seem like he thought that he was going to stump that professor
and put him in his place. Instead he got a direct intelligent response, but still seems to feel like he's proven something.

I have a theory about this type of exchange. They ask a hard (at least they consider it hard) question which, along with the answer, will go over the heads of most of their base then, regardless of the answer, they flaunt the whole exchange as if they've proven a point (even though they haven't). They figure that most of their base will be to ignorant to even understand what was being discussed and will simply accept the implication that the expert was "put in his place".

Did I explain that well? I really think that that may be what is going on with this.

6. It's easy to stump a professor
Just ask him if it is better to feed candles to a pet Norwegian platypus before or after its bicycle riding lessons.

I'd like to see YOU try and answer that question -- how about it?!

10. After.
Since the candles may cause an intestinal obstruction, which you wouldn't want to occur during bicycle lessons. I'm assuming that the platypus, or one of it's ancestors, was born in Norway to a naturalized parent, thus making it Norwegian.

the platypus would not only avoid any cramps while exercising but also replenish nutrients lost from the exertion.

Woa... blacked out for a second.
