Katherine Yurica wrote about the founder of this movement, Paul Weyrich. Weyrich passed away last year, but his legacy of contempt of liberals lives on.

Conquering by stealth and deception.

From 2004:

Americans and the main-stream media have been very slow in catching on to the fact that we are in a war—a war that is cultural, religious and political. One document not mentioned in The Despoiling of America is the closeted manual that reveals how the right wing in American politics can get and keep power. It was created under the tutelage of Paul Weyrich, the man who founded the Free Congress Foundation. Conservative leaders consider Weyrich to be the “most powerful man in American politics today.” There is no question of his immense influence in conservative circles. He is also considered the founder of the Heritage Foundation, a conservative think tank made possible with funding from Joseph Coors and Richard Mellon-Scaife. Weyrich served as the Founding President from 1973-1974.

To get a sense of how revolutionary the political fight for power in the U.S. is, we need to look at a few quotes from what has been dubbed, “Paul Weyrich’s Teaching Manual,” the Free Congress Foundation’s strategic plan on how to gain control of the government of the U.S. Written by Eric Heubeck, and titled, “The Integration of Theory and Practice: A Program for the New Traditionalist Movement,” the document is no longer available at the Free Congress Foundation’s website for obvious reasons. But excerpts are published at the Yurica Report. The excerpts explain why the Dominionists are winning; the tactics they endorse are sheer Machiavellian:

I have paraphrased the four immoral principles of the Dominionist movement as the following:

1) Falsehoods are not only acceptable, they are a necessity. The corollary is: The masses will accept any lie if it is spoken with vigor, energy and dedication.

2) It is necessary to be cast under the cloak of “goodness” whereas all opponents and their ideas must be cast as “evil.”

3) Complete destruction of every opponent must be accomplished through unrelenting personal attacks.

4) The creation of the appearance of overwhelming power and brutality is necessary in order to destroy the will of opponents to launch opposition of any kind.

More from the author of Weyrich's manual, Eric Heubeck.

“Our movement will be entirely destructive, and entirely constructive. We will not try to reform the existing institutions. We only intend to weaken them, and eventually destroy them. We will endeavor to knock our opponents off-balance and unsettle them at every opportunity. All of our constructive energies will be dedicated to the creation of our own institutions….

“We will maintain a constant barrage of criticism against the Left. We will attack the very legitimacy of the Left. We will not give them a moment’s rest. We will endeavor to prove that the Left does not deserve to hold sway over the heart and mind of a single American. We will offer constant reminders that there is an alternative, there is a better way. When people have had enough of the sickness and decay of today’s American culture, they will be embraced by and welcomed into the New Traditionalist movement. The rejection of the existing society by the people will thus be accomplished by pushing them and pulling them simultaneously.

“We will use guerrilla tactics to undermine the legitimacy of the dominant regime…

“We must create a countervailing force that is just as adept as the Left at intimidating people and institutions that are used as tools of left-wing activism but are not ideologically committed, such as Hollywood celebrities, multinational corporations, and university administrators. We must be feared, so that they will think twice before opening their mouths…

Wow, powerful stuff. It really did work, and the tactics still make our Southern Democrats cower and cave in .

Weyrich had more to say through the years.

A writer, a lobbyist and an organizer on behalf of conservative causes and especially social conservatism, Weyrich (pronounced WY-rick) was one of the American far right's most unbending ideologues. He was widely credited with coining the phrase "moral majority" as a rallying label for social conservatives. It became the name of the religion-based political organization that was led by the Rev. Jerry Falwell.

A deacon in the ultra-conservative Melkite Greek Catholic Church, Weyrich openly fused his faith and his politics.

"Defence is a moral issue," he told The Washington Post in 1983, before the fall of the Soviet Union, adding that he considered the Communists to be godless oppressors. "There are some things worse than war. One is surrender -- the moral consequences are such that the nation would be destroyed. Since I believe in eternal life, if it became necessary to sacrifice my life for my country or my beliefs, well, then I'm willing to do so. The people who have come up with the better-red-than-dead idea are not believers."

12. a matter of interpretation
I understand what you are saying but looking at the actual term: I think a majority of Americans are moral. They just voted for the first black President.

Moral Majority is simply a brand name, consisting of a minority of fundies and bigots.

2. I can't think of his name at this moment.
There was always a dj who would refer to the Moral Majority as the Moral Moronity.

"Since the 2006 elections, many have assumed that the right-wing's moral outrage machine has gone off the rails. But it's still rolling along - albeit very slowly, with a nasty clanking sound, and a lot of dirty smoke pouring out the back.

For a fresh glimpse into the twisted minds of the Moral Moronity, take a look at this press release from anti-porn crusaders "Morality in Media":

On May 17, Morality in Media received a call from a citizen in Atlanta who reported that Delta Airlines had aired HBO's "Rome," with scenes of nudity and simulated sex, on overhead TV screens in the aisle. When he complained, he was told the program should have been available only on "private" screens. When he objected to showing "Rome" on "private" screens, he was told the airlines would be editing sexually explicit scenes to three seconds or less and that passengers who objected to content on "private" screens would be reseated.

Surely editing the content down to three seconds and making it available only on private screens would be acceptable, right?

Wrong!

Robert Peters, President of Morality in Media, had the following comments:

"When I fly, I often find myself watching programming that is exhibited on a screen controlled by a passenger seated adjacent to me or in a row ahead of me. These screens, like laptop computer or cell phone screens, are 'private' only in the sense that each passenger controls the programming."

Er, perhaps he shouldn't be such a nosy bastard. And he can't escape watching programming that's on a screen in a row ahead of him? He probably wouldn't have that problem if he didn't stand up and lean forward."

It's long and funny.

4. Great video by Cenk Uygur with more details about why they went into politics.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JE6uVGQaCsU

He says the religious right became a real political movement with the desegration of schools.

Here is the Paul Weyrich video Cenk refers to in the video above. Weyrich says he doesn't want everyone to vote. He also refers to goo goo syndrome. The good government syndrome.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8GBAsFwPglw

The first time I ever heard of the goo goo syndrome was when Rahm apparently spoke of Dean and his supporters that way...

"a good-government reformer with a base of liberal idealists who are more educated and individualistic than your average Democratic machine foot soldier"

Hard to tell if the author was quoting Rahm or interpreting him.

7. That one line speaks volumes....
... "The masses will accept any lie if it is spoken with vigor, energy and dedication."

The CNP and RNC took this to heart, and have been using it non-stop ever since.

And thus began the right-wing's drive to take over the media, to get their message - and only their message - across.

Then along came FOX news.... the right's 24-hour widescreen wet dream.

9. GOP provided start up funds for the Christian Coalition . . .
Edited on Thu Apr-30-09 08:17 PM by defendandprotect
The 1960's revolution - which I believe is still underway -- was really an attack on

patriarchy and organized patriarchal religion, it's underpinning. Also it's economic

system - capitalism.

As far as I can see, "Christians" and "Evangelicals" are waking themselves --

While America continues on with the revolution.

The Bush link with organized patriarchal religion worked to provide them with access

to taxpayer money and I hope that will soon be stopped.

Meanwhile, "Manifest Destiny" and "Man's Dominion Over Nature" have delivered Global Warming

from which, I doubt, we will recover.

Every day we should be adding up the costs of patriarchy in its war on Nature, women and

children.

Start with the loss of the planet!

To think of the years I, and others, spent trying to convince people that they were using the church for political purposes.

15. reagan killed the Fairness Docrtine in 1987 and the right bought up a lot of
radio stations and created a monopoly, subsidizing limbaugh and sons, and that is what really created/unified the modern GOP base- and has now destroyed the party and nearly the country with it.

the talk radio monopoly really made the difference the last 20 years. their whole message was unamerican and undemocratic but they had coordinated UNCONTESTED repetition from 1000 radio stations to a crowd the size of the one that voted for obama, with call screeners to protect them from the truth.
their megastations dominate local politics in many red states with a dispropotionate number of flat earther senators, and nationally their hundred-million dollar blowhards function as the biggest PC cops, censors-by-threat, and political and media intimidators in the country.
