Host of CBC Radio's Quirks and Quarks,
Master of Ceremonies for:

International Symposium on Solar Energy from Space
“FROM THE SUN TO THE EARTH”
An International Symposium on Solar Energy from Space
Sponsored by SPACE Canada & the International Academy of Astronautics

SPACE Canada is holding an international symposium on solar power satellites from September 8-10, 2009 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. The co-chairs of the IAA Study, John Mankins and Dr. Nobu Kaya, have committed to holding a two-day technical session in conjunction with SPACE Canada’s symposium where the conclusions of the IAA Study on solar energy from space will be presented. Approximately 100 technical papers are expected to be presented in concurrent workshops. SPACE Canada will host a one-day international policy forum following the technical session of the IAA.

For further information on SPACE Canada and the International Symposium on Solar Power Satellites please contact Margaret McLaughlin, 1-800-880-1374

1. Yeah, and when the satellite gets bumped, the ray will rake across the world
Killing all in its path and setting huge fires. I think looking for better energy storage is a better bang for the buck - gather during daylight, store and send during night time. This isn't rocket science, people!

2. The beams are not dangerous. Too diffuse.

4. hahaha
Yeah, right. I bet you a dollar sitting in one of these for ten minutes will boil your brain fluid. And surely you can see this is a cover for the military's long wished death ray satellites, right?

5. There are far more efficient and inexpensive ways to kill people.
Frankly, there are far more efficient and inexpensive ways to generate electricity. But that's a food-fight for another day.

At any rate, there is absolutely no need to engineer a power transmission beam that is even a little bit dangerous. I suppose the DoD could, if they wanted, engineer a space based "death ray." But earth-based weaponry can kill millions of people just fine. No expensive orbital deployment required.

6. You'd lose that bet.
NASA has even done wind tunnel test with birds flying through the beams.

11. Depends on the frequency. You use a cell phone?
Cell phones are nothing more than a less powerful Microwave oven. Surprisingly, the cordless Phone base stations, running at 2.4 ghz, are outputting radiation at very high levels, 24 hours a day and people don't realize it. Your wireless router, broadcasts RF energy that penetrates walls, and allows the signal to be captured by anyone within a certain radius.

Or maybe you watch Direct TV, in that case, you are already bombarded with electronic smog and you don't even realize it.

Cell phone towers, more of the same microwave energy.

Go into a bank, and you are in a microwave oven, because they don't like the idea of their computer signals leaking out onto the street. Their answer? Apply a metallized plastic coating to the walls and windows, creating refractive surfaces much like a microwave oven.

Military? You think the bandwidth to pilot remote drones over afghanistan isn't in the 10's of ghz range? especially when they can get vidoe feedas, as well as control the flight characteristics, on top of encryption?

They are using frequencies that we barely have tools to measure them with. All unregulated, but widely used, present everywhere on earth, and unknown to the majority of people.

3. you realize...
that the proceedings from that symposium will provide food-fight ammunition in E/E for months.

It's going to be awesome.

7. wooot! THIS IS A PLANET CHANGING EVENT!!!
WHY? Simply because if you can make a profit at this corporations will set up orbiting space colonies whose primary industry will be the manufacturing of power satilites!!

We move into space in a real way, the manufactering of these sats, mean colonization of the moon, for mining its raw materials to build the L-5 colonies, that make the sats. !!!!

This is awesome!

9. Here is a few concept art, keep in mind the colonies would be cylinderical
Edited on Wed Apr-29-09 06:56 PM by Lance31
With a width of at least 4 miles, the reason is four miles of atmoshphere will create clouds. the cylinders would spin to provide inertia/gravity. the mirrors would refect sunlight through the windows that run the length of the cylinder to give night and day to each of the three areas, call them Paris, London, and Rome after Rama (heheh) The soil can be brought up from the moon for nothing in energy costs. Soil is treated with earth soil bacterias and spread around on the inside of the cylinder, landscaping it then is given grass, trees, water, endangered animals, you name it. in the center on the cylinder BTW would be zero G so if you strung a cylinderical net down the length of the cylinder IE two miles up from where you stood, that area could be the site of man powered flying races or what ever you could come up with, or a torus in that area for "Honeymoon hotels, for zero g sex or torus shaped swimming pools near the ends of the spindle of the cylinder.

10. Curse you Tesla! How dare you do the pioneer work for transmitting energy without wires!
Just for that, we will let you die alone, unfunded, and steal all of your notes and manuscripts and put them in the hands of the Military!

On a serious note, Tesla was working on just this thing in Colorado Springs, and Wardenclyffe in New York, until J.P. Morgan withdrew all his funding.

Just last year, MIT announced technology to power laptops wirelessly using resonant RF waves on a tuned receiver.

All this knowledge has been around for half a century, but the money changers chose not to fund any research that would actually enable cheaper, less centralized production and distribution of power.

We have all been kept in the dark, trained like monkeys in a education system designed to benefit industry and not humanity.
