He got $300 from my house during the primaries. His voice must be heard.

Why is it that there's maybe 5 people in Congress that fight for the American People? Didn't we elect all 535 of them to represent us?

Odd, that.

35. Why is it that maybe 5 people in Congress fight for the American people?
Because the average Congressman/woman or politician in general doesn't give a damn about the American people. Their main concern is raising campaign funds, so the focus is on those wealthy and well-connected enough to give, and who, of course, expect lots of favors in return.

A few years back my brother attended a campaign fund raising event for former CA gov Gray Davis at the home of a big contributor. He had helped the guy with an insurance claim (brother was a claims rep at the time) and the guy asked if he wanted to meet the candidate. Not having anything else to do that day, brother said ok. Davis came in with a big entourage and eventually spotted my brother. He walked up with a big smile and handshake and asked my brother who he was and how much he was giving. When my brother said he was merely a guest of the host Davis backed away and turned on his heels. Didn't even throw in a "nice to have met you."

Dennis K is one of the rare politicians with a conscience and a desire to actually serve. Most of them are worthless.

37. well, the media told them so, gosh darn it!
From the crop of Democratic candidates we had we could have done an awful lot worse than Obama, but I'm afraid that people weren't informed enough to even know what better/worse choices there were to be made. Not that I had anything to do with it - the incompetent party leadership in my state decided that I didn't get to have a say in the Democratic primary.

The Corporate media picked the candidates. Americans did not
have a choice. The media is as corrupt as our government. That
is why we have to demand that THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE is
reinstated. It won't solve the problem but it will help. It
will also allow Americans to become better informed, the way
it used to be. People actually got to hear different
viewpoints and decide for themselves....what a concept.

65. Agree -- and I think we have start looking at the involvement of corporate-media ....
in election steals.

The large computers used by media began coming in during the mid-1960's -
and often there would be odd jumps in totals of underdog candidates --
followed by computer crashes and then a surge for the "favored" candidate.

Most of our journalists are honest -- corporate heads aren't.

The electronic voting computer began to come in during the late 1960's ---
coincidentally about the time America passed The Voting Rights Act.

They painted him as a kook who sees UFO's and has a young wife with a tongue piercing. The corporate media didn't want him shaking things up and actually advocating for the American people, instead we get corporate shills advocating for global corporations. It's really that simple. Anyway he has my vote if he runs again, no doubt about it.

I am a new poster to D.U. are you a troll? If not, wake up.
The American people, in general, are so brainwashed by the
media and the government (for two), that they have no idea, on
the most part, what is best for them. It sure as hell wasn't
McCain/Palin. In your post, you sound like one of the many
clueless that we are talking about. You think McSame is not a
"corporate sellout?" Man, he doesn't even know how
many homes (not rentals) that he has. Even if the American
people do know what is in their best interest, our
"elections" are so crooked that they have been
declared by the International Fair Elections Council, to be a
joke.

119. i'm neither a troll nor am i sleeping.
i really don't know how you interpreted my post to get what you got out of it.

i agree the american people don't know what's good for them.
i agree mccain/palin were not good for them.
i agree our elecitons are crooked.

the difference between us seems to be that i don't think obama is good for us either. i think that in addition to mccain being a corporate sellout, so is obama . i want you to consider the possibility that both are true.

in addition to mccain and obama i think virtually all other members of our government are corporate sellouts.

i think kucinich is NOT a corporate sellout and that the very survival of our country rests on supporting him and the few others like him.

NOW, if you disagree with any of that, you might want to consider keeping it to yourself, because i'm not interested.

I apologize. I agree with all of your assumptions. I
misinterpreted your post. I also see that Obama is a corporate
schill and that there is basically no difference between the
"parties" except that the elected democrats give
"lip service" to sanity, while the republicans revel
in their idiocy. I also think Dennis to be an exception to
that rule and (independent) Bernie Saunders also.

When Tim Russert hosted the debates, he asked Kucinich one question, if he believed in UFOs. This was a blatant attack on the BEST candidate for our country, done by a member of the corporate media. Did Russert ask Kucinich any other questions? NO!
I rest my case.

vocal for single payer (and I'm not one of her supporters for the record). The only thing I've ever heard attributed to Obama is that he has said if we were "starting from scratch" single payer would be the best. I believe that is pandering, but even so it is the only thing I've heard him say about single payer.

just having a public option. She was for a combined public-private mix. However one difference is that she was for a mandate and Obama was not (and still is not). I feel that a mandate is necessary in order to deal with costs AND ALSO SINGLE PAYER with a Medicare-type program for all.

121. Thanks for the clarification -
and she is probably right on this one. But she knows because she dealt with all this the first time around. Mandate not just for the costs, but also so everyone is covered. Everyone. Why so many people are willing to just throw away other humans is beyond me... In a nation with so much wealth (we have over 350 billionaires while the next closest nation - which I believe is Germany has about 60), we still don't have basic healthcare, jobs, and shelter for all. Shameful.

61. DENNIS IS ONE OF THE VERY FEW "GOOD GUYS"
Dennis Kucinich and Bernie Saunders are the only TWO Senators
that I am aware of, that really represent the American people.
I was willing, and eager, to "throw my vote away" on
Dennis for President. The Republicans, with the help of the
Democrats (one big party really)forced Dennis to leave the
Presidential race. They funded an opponent that Dennis had to
"go home" and raise the money he needed, to beat him
in the Senatorial race. They knew that even if Dennis could
not win, he could make Americans AWARE of many relevant issues
and offer real solutions, solutions for the people, and the
party(ies) did not want that. They want to keep the power in
the hands of the wealthy and give us the choice of Corporatism
or Corporatism Lite. I donated to the Kucinich campaign and I
realize that the "powers that be" will never let a
true "man of the people" be elected as our
President. It is a shame. If he were elected we would have
seen some real solutions to the problems that still plague us.
We would have single payer health care, bailouts for citizens
not greedy corporations and PEACE. What a great country we
could be, under the leadership of Dennis Kucinich. He is so
passionate about helping real Americans. Man, we lost a great
chance. The media was his worst enemy. They cut him out of the
debates. Just like Senator Max Baucus(D) refused to allow any
single payer voices to be heard at his "Discussions to
FIX health care." What a sick joke to play on the
American people, daily.

It's just totally dropping the insurance companies from the picture may result in 100's of thousands of job losses....

I see starting off with a choice where I can choose single payer or employer based would be workable...

But if there is no choice for single payer... Then I have little support for such a health care plan...

Somewhere in the middle here will do more to bring about progress...

93. Maybe, but I think the insurance companies will continue to write the rules
as long as they're involved in the process.

They've got too much to lose. Real single-payer would beat them just about every time (because it's non-profit) so they'll make sure to hobble it somehow so that they keep raking in the money.

The only way out of that would be to remove them altogether. Then they'll have no stake in bribing legislators.

As to the jobs: yes, that's an issue. On the other hand, if I had a chance to shut down Blackwater/Xe, I wouldn't let the specter of layoffs stop me. Health insurances companies aren't quite Blackwater, but they are deliberately detrimental to the American public, so I think the comparison is worth making.

114. You're welcome...Kucinich has taken hits for this ever since it
happened, welcome to DU.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Kucinich

"...After Kucinich refused to sell Muni Light, Cleveland's publicly owned electric utility, the Cleveland mafia put out a hit on Kucinich. A hitman from Maryland planned to shoot him in the head during the Columbus Day Parade, but the plot fell apart when Kucinich was hospitalized and missed the event. When the city fell into default shortly thereafter, the mafia leaders called off the contract killer.<16>

In the book Best and Worst of the Big-City Leaders, 1820–1993, Melvin G. Holli, in consultation with a panel of selected experts, claimed Kucinich to be among the ten worst big-city mayors of all time, while Kucinich's supporters say that Kucinich kept his campaign promise of refusing to sell Muni Light to CEI and was brave for not giving in to big business. Specifically, it was the Cleveland Trust Company that suddenly required all of the city's debts be paid in full, which forced the city into default, after news of Kucinich's refusal to sell the city utility. For years these debts were routinely rolled over, pending future payment, until Kucinich's announcement was made public. In 1998 the council honored him for having the "courage and foresight" to stand up to the banks and saving the city an estimated $195 million between 1985 and 1995.<17>"

126. Old Michigander
Yes, he put Cleveland into default by refusing to acquiesce to
the wealthy power companies. He refused to sell the
municipally owned power station and let them raise rates for
the poor people of Cleveland. History has proven that was a
genius decision on his part. Not only does Cleveland have
reasonable electricity rates, they also make a bundle of $$ on
their ownership of the electric company. Ever play monopoly?
Never sell your utilities. Kucinich was standing up to the
wealthy then, just like he does today. He was the youngest
mayor ever elected in Cleveland, and history proves, the best
and most foresighted. BTW, the wealthy bankers could have
easily helped Cleveland by allowing them to refinance. It was
a great deal for them monetarily and as a show of civic
mindedness. But, they wanted to own the electric company and
get all of the profits to show Cleveland (and their young,
idealistic mayor) who was "the boss." GREED! It blew
up in their face and Dennis was seen for the peoples champion
that he is.

He is one of only a handful of lonely voices in Congress who actually do represent the people who elected them. We need hundreds more of him. He has been right about almost everything over the past eight years, and yet, has he been given any role in this new administration? Shouldn't you be seeking the advice of those who 'got it right' rather than 'those, like Geithner and Summers, who got it wrong' when setting up a new administration?

102. You Mean Obama Broke a Pinky Promise? Again?
Oh man, we are so screwed. Keep in mind no matter how bad it gets, a pharmaceutical company has a mood altering drug ready to dull the pain. What a great time to be a corporate fat cat - handouts and bailouts and big slices of treasury into the hands of the ultra rich.

From the CIA contractors who tortured victims, to wall street swine who swindled our retirement funds, to AT&T who tapped our phones and routed our mail to NSA and FBI who spied on Americans, to the bastards who started a war based on lies - Amnesty all around.

But for everyone else, life moving toward hell faster than I expected. Now we have both political parties fully endorsing a corporate style fascism. Ah the media - well, you might have noticed that insurance and health care corporations are massive sponsors. So don't expect to get any objective reporting. News Flash - "Industry leaders say they will try very very very hard to control costs, however, they reiterated they need less regulation to make this happen...."

So most everyone sits on their asses and we watch hope dashed so thoroughly and completely upon the rocks of corporate America. The executive branch really is for corporate executives and Obama is behaving like he is preparing for a corner CEO job when the whitehouse gig is over.

There should be people in the streets making very big noises. But there won't be. Because people are afraid of police and losing what little they have. Historically, this form of government control of its population is well documented and the consequences of this apathy are always severe.

104. I have a question about Congress... Probably a dumb one, but alas...
I've been watching these kinds of videos for a long time, and I wonder... Don't politicians ever have debates in the House of Representatives? All I see all the time is people giving (brief or long) speeches, and after that, they leave, and it's someone else's turn. According to the noise in the background, half of the people in there aren't even paying attention to the person speaking. In the Dutch 'House' a politician is granted time in accordance with the size of his party (the bigger the party you belong to, the more time you have to speak). All other members will be quiet and listen, and at any given moment they're allowed to interrupt to engage in a debate. I've never seen that in any of the videos posted here.

Forgive me if this seems like a really dumb question, but I would like to know...

By the way, I'm 100% behind DK! The Dutch media covered the primaries extensively, but they never even mentioned his name.

but on the floor, it is lots of this. Of course, a good part of the House pays no attention to DK because he is considered "fringe" so I'm not surprised at the rudeness of those in attendance.

110. Heh... we have committees on top of that.
Edited on Wed May-13-09 07:57 PM by DutchLiberal
But a lot of the time, in the end, all the debating still doesn't solve anything, and the parties retain their positions. But, from time to time a debate will have an impact and parties will change their positions. I don't think it's possible in the U.S. Congress to call for a Secretary or the President himself to come to the House/Senate to be questioned, is it? Here, Ministers and the Prime-Minister have to defend themselves before Parliament all the time.

Like in this clip, where the opposition is questioning the Prime-Minister. Behind him are the Ministers from his Cabinet. They have to listen as well. And the opposition will debate each other as well:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3LcLKdPg0_M&feature=related

Still, don't be envious too much. Now is not a good time to move to Holland, politically speaking. Over the last decade, the country has shifted more and more to the right. The Netherlands try to emulate the U.S.: several laws are breaking our privacy in the name of 'national security'; the 'war on drugs' is beginning; health care is partly privatized; social benefits are being cut. And all this with the help of the Labor Party, taking the role of 'Blue Dog Democrats'.

But, your Dutch is not so bad. You made a typo with "tal", which should be "taal". And you addressed me with "uw", which is a polite form which doesn't exist in English. Dutch (like French and German) makes a distinction between "jij" en "u". In English, there's one form: "you". "Jij" is used for informal use, "u" is for formal use. So you can call me "jij". :P

113. Yes- Obama successful at keeping things same under citizen pressure to change
I admire him for keeping things the same while claiming change, in the same sort of way Bush liked to talk about how he got government spending under control and made the world a safer place.

Amnesty for torture, amnesty for wire tapping, amnesty for wall street (although I think they got a stern talking to), amnesty for health care exploitation - health care reform turned over to corporate America. Health care is shaping up to be the next wall street style give away. There must be justice before there can be change. We have neither. Instead we just gave away 3 trillion dollars with little control or over sight. I don't see this as managing anything except placating the ultra rich with the idea it will one day trickle down to the rest of us.

This "big news on cost reform" is a major major embarrassment to any reform minded voter who helped put this man in office.
