The wife of the current Presidential candiate has brought energy to younger voters in Iran - and she is making an impact. Whether the election turns on this remains to be seen, but the call for freedom of speech, freedom of 'the pen' and other such ideals brings enthusiasm to those who want change in Iran.

4. Nice
They look just like us!

Too bad US news doesn't cover anything outside the US any more, besides what propaganda our corporate masters want to feed us.

10.  - why do you say things like that?
Most BOOMERS?? Do you have to find an age bracket to blame this crap on rather than chalk it up to cowardly people?

6. The conservative U.S. establishment needs to take off their blinders, and fast
For a bunch of people in charge of how we interact with other countries and cultures,
there is a glaring, and very embarrassing lack of appreciation of the fact that in
other countries and other cultures, the rules are not the same. I can only hope that
a Clinton-led State Department will start to dismantle the old way of seeing things.

In Iran, most women have accepted the fact that they have to cover their hair, even if
most Americans (myself included, I admit) would see it as repressive if introduced into
American society. It's just a tradition whose (post-Shah re-) installation is not seen
as objectionable enough to protest over. Just because we see it one way doesn't mean
we're "right" any more than their seeing it their way makes them automatically "wrong."

In much of northern Europe, anyone can bathe naked on many public beaches, and no one
gives it a second thought, whereas in most of the USA, they'd be arrested. Again, we're
not "right," and the Europeans are not "wrong." Change on cultural issues like that will
come from within, never from the outside. The Swedes haven't yet bombed us for forbidding
nude bathing. I can only hope that no one is left in the US Government that thinks we
need to bomb Iran because they still make their women cover their hair.

11. Make their women cover their hair?
As if a woman was some kind of commodity, or a child, that must be forced to do what is right. Here in the US we do NOT make our women go to the beach in swimsuits. If a woman wanted to go out to the beach naked she could. True, she would be either restricted to certain beaches, or be arrested at other beaches. If she was arrested, she would probably face a fine and so would a naked man at that same beach.

We don't force women to do anything more than we force men to do, except that the ultra conservative religiously insane would like to force women to give birth to every fertilized egg.

Of course changes to a culture must come from within. But equating the subjugation of women to a mere tradition and not a systematic discrimination against an entire gender is ridiculous. Nice to see some change in Iran, it has to start somewhere, but it is a far cry from treating all grown women as adult human beings.

13. Yeah, they have a lot of charming traditions we should respect.

Are you kidding?

In Iran most women have "accepted the fact" because there were cultural goon squads after the revolution which went around enforcing the "tradition". It's not just a "tradition" or quaint custom or a fashion statement- it's an emblem of the same "culture" which hangs gay people, locks up reporters, and trashes the notions of freedom of religion and speech. If the US were to pass such laws, people would be screaming for the UN to step in and an "international court" to try the politicians who passed it.

The nude beach thing is an absurd analogy. There is nothing special about a beach, except that some people like to go naked and of them not all prefer it for the most noble of reasons. There is a huge difference between a law which requires that you wear clothing which covers your genitals and one which requires that you wear a religious garment specific to your sex. The valid comparison might be that the US laws require women to wear covering on their breasts but don't require the same of men. That hardly rises to the level of hypocrisy.

NO, I don't have to respect the way Iran does things. Not when it's all tied in to the state of Iran murdering gay people in the name of Allah or as some quaint tradition.
