1. Take away their tasers and
this little old lady would have been thrown to the ground, or across the hood of his car, and cuffed.

Watch the whole damn video, not some stupid short clip from Fox.

Signing a ticket is a promise to appear in court, nothing more. It's not admitting guilt. She refused to sign, and refused to comply with the officers directions. Once you've refused, and the officer is moving on to the next steps, such as actual arrest, it's too late to say 'oh ok, I'll sign it'. You're going to be arrested.

Sign the ticket. Comply with lawful instructions. Know your rights.

Over use of tasers as a 'compliance' tool, is a problem and needs to be addressed, but not in this video.

3. No excuse
So a big guy can't handle a grandmother without a taser? So you think he was 100% correct in his actions?

Strange world we live in when obvious losers with tasers are defended by people who think we should all just take our lumps in a quiet manner. Yes sir. No sir. I'll pay that fine for nothing sir.

Thanks you sir. May I have another.

Know your rights indeed. You have rights, and this a$$hat cop is making sure you have a few less.

4. I think Tasers are in fact, overused.
But the use shown here, is consistent with policy, not just in Texas, but anywhere in the country I am aware of. She likely comitted a crime when she pushed at the Officer.

If we want to make an issue of the over-use of tasers as a 'compliance' tool, this woman is a terrible poster-child for it. I don't care if she is a seemingly harmless 72 year old woman. I don't 'let things slide' based on age or gender. Do you?

9. Why is it too late to say 'oh ok, I'll sign it'????
Why? Because Baby Huey's ego is bruised so now the little old lady (who happens to be an asshole) has to do time?

Really?

10. Conflict had turned physical at that point.
Even if it hadn't, I think once you refuse, you're screwed.

5. Cenk is 100% wrong in his analysis - guess he should watch the entire video not Fox's report

We saw today what an 88 year old can do - don't give me the 'old grandmother' line - she was belligerent, refused to follow direct instructions and was warned repeatedly. I guess we should say 'poor 88 year old James Von Brunn, he was just being an old grandfather' when he shot up the Holocaust Museum.

Let the jury call it, but I bet you she loses.

6. You might be right but you took it way too far with the analogy IMO

Guns are the great equalizer. Guns often make age, size, strength and intelligence moot points.

An unarmed 72 year old woman on the other hand is (999,999 times out of a million) not much of a threat, *generally speaking*. At least not for a trained, much younger officer. Granted, maybe the grandma could've been weight training and kick-boxing while taking performance enhancing drugs and PCP, but outside of that...

;)

7. are we talking about Texas - the concealed weapon state? hello?
Edited on Wed Jun-10-09 07:21 PM by tomm2thumbs

you say she was 'unarmed' - you knew that somehow? amazing

She was feisty and belligerent, driving a pickup truck, over the speed limit, in rural Texas, refusing basic requests from an officer - let's see, I'd say if I were that officer I'd consider her a possible concealed firearm holder and proceed cautiously. Thereafter, she was warned repeatedly that she was under arrest and to comply. She refused. She was warned again and again. More refusal and an attempt to get back into her vehicle.

Concealed firearm or not, I'd equally prefer an officer not be shoved into traffic by 'poor granny' in her angry state, so if he needs to keep an arm's length to arrest her, then so be it. Officers understand a camera is running on their vehicles and that their actions are recorded. I don't think he was out for jollys and I don't believe that the officer felt she was 'harmless'.

Of course watching the full video gives a full idea of the events which Cenk's 'Foxed version' does not make clear. Genuinely surprised Cenk suddenly finds Fox's report is an appropriate video to comment on given the 'Fox touch' that was put on it by their editors. Very surprised by Cenk indeed.

8. Maybe we're miscommunicating then.
I didn't think that was made clear in your original comment, but I'm sure you disagree. Oh well.

11. Cars are going by at freeway speed.
A shove, lunge, or anything like that, and someone's going to be a meat pancake.

Worse, the entire time this is going on, the officer AND the little old lady are at risk for a car that goes off the road and crushes them both by rear-ending the cop car.

Pretty high stress situation, even if the old lady isn't a physically imposing threat.

14. how about this...
if you are a cop - think twice about tasering a 72 year old woman, whether she is belligerent or not, because, even if you are in the right - you're rep is going to be shit
