Schulberg was a media visionary who foresaw the rise of faux rebels and phony populists like Glenn Beck and Bill O'Reilly . His character of Lonesome Rhodes (brilliantly played by a then-unknown Andy Griffith) dupes the people through folksy antics into supporting rightwingers.

The film is probably the best piece on corporate control of the media ever filmed. If you've never seen it, do yourself a favor and rent it.
(BTW, A young Mike Wallace appears as his himself in one scene)

2. yeah. i loved that movie in a scary kind of way
it was a bit eye opening for me to see Andy Taylor of the Andy Griffith show acting like this. (I was young when I saw it and that was all I knew of him) lol.

I should go rewatch it now that the many years have passed and I have modern day hillbilly demagogues to compare him to.

3. That was a great movie. It was mocking corporate tv in the first years of tv.
