Parents of 2-year-old Aislin Bates say she has been denied insurance coverage because her weight of 22 pounds is below normal.

The family's insurance company says there's more to it than just height and weight. A spokeswoman for United Healthcare Golden Rule says most of the people who apply for health insurance are accepted. The spokeswoman couldn't talk about the specific case but did say "when evaluating height and weight, we typically utilize other factors like medical records that show evidence of treatment."

The Bates say they do have evidence of treatment. Aislin has been treated for a gag reflex, which affected her eating. Her parents say they have letters from both the therapist and pediatrician stating that their daughter is growing normally and that her size hasn't impacted her health.

It's not just children who are underweight. Parents of obese children say they are being denied coverage as well. A mother in Grand Junction, Colo. says she was denied coverage for her 4-month-old baby boy because he was considered overweight at 17 pounds. In that case, the insurance company changed its policy and now says it won't consider obesity a pre-existing condition.

2. The only way to make such huge profits is to stop insuring all of those sick people
The people with diseases keep sucking money out of the system. Ideally, insurance companies would like only to cover people who pay their monthly premiums and never need the insurance.

:sarcasm:

5. They are the Goldilocks death panels...... If there was ever a reason to
provide health care would be to make sure this child maintains weight and does not get more unhealthy because no access to affordable healthcare.

7. So did they have insurance for her through the company and then
they dropped her? That is a very low blow. I hope this company gets a lot of bad publicity from this. There should be no reason to deny coverage for especially kids. How terrifying for her parents who would of course want her to have access to the best care!

9. There should NEVER be any legitimate reason to deny coverage of health care or direct health care to
anyone, ever. At least in a civilized society that respects
its citizenry.
