Pt 2 -- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7R0_dU4AKPo

"Ralph gets to luxuriate in the purity of his irrelevance."

Loved that line.

2. If we didn't have the Ralph Naders and Elizabeth Warrens of America pushing Barney
Frank and Chris Dodd, THEY would be far less vigorous in their defense of the American taxpayer and small investor.

I'm glad that Nader kept bringing up Paul Volcker, the guy who has been shut out of the debate over how to deal effectively with the Wall Street Banksters. Thanks to President Obama's decision to rely upon Larry "Deregulation" Summers and Timothy "Friend of Wall Street" Geithner, Volcker has been shunted aside.

The new regulations that have passed the House Committee are a step in the right direction, but we need more and more stringent regulations of the Wall Street Manipulators will be raiding our Treasury again.

Recommend.

3. " In 2000, Barney voted for a bill that suported the deregulation of the
derivative market."

Barney did not deny this. He had no answer for this.

Will we have a second collapse? Ed asked ...

I just saw a 60 minutes piece that we will have a second collapse.

4. No, he voted against that 2000 deregulation.
Both Ed and Nader were giving Representative Frank props for that.

Or what else were you talking about?

Barney's a hack. This would never have happened if Ralph was in charge. Don't think I'm right? BULLSHIT! Barny got called out on this shit. He was asleep at the fucking wheel and now he's doing damage control.

As far back as 1991, Frank was pushing Fannie Mae to break its rules, lower its standards, and buy risky loans. As The Boston Globe reported in November 1992, he helped to convince Fannie Mae to make “substantial concessions” on its rules regarding multiple-family-home mortgages, despite data from Fannie itself showing that the “default rate on mortgages on two-family homes is twice that of single-family homes, and the rate for three-deckers is five times the rate for single-family dwellings.” During the Clinton years, the time when the foundation was being poured for the financial meltdown, Fannie and Freddie were growing by leaps and bounds. They underwrote more than a trillion dollars in mortgages, and Fannie reported double-digit growth, every year. In assessing what—if any—responsibility the Clinton administration had for the financial crisis, Clinton himself would later tell ABC News’s Chris Cuomo that “I think the responsibility that the Democrats have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was president to put some standards and tighten up on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.”

7. Yeah, too bad this is the first time Ralph
has actually tried to do anything meaningful in between the times he was running for president and helping the results be close enough for the Rethugs to steal.

I'll take an active legislator "hack" on my side than an ephemeral egotist like Nader any day.

13. How long has there been a show on the air that would invite
Ralph on to discuss his views???? Oh right...not very long.

Barney Frank sold out decades ago.

Anyone who trusts "Committee Chairmen" to do the people's work is smoking something.

22. Nader didn't run becuse he expected to get elected but to keep a national platform of progressive is
issues alive. He kept the green party alive so they could be a part of the national discussion. You attribute motivations to Nader that you pulled out of your ass.

Count of no count the SC installed Bush.

If everyone voting for Nader would have voted for Gore or Kerry the results would have been exactly the same.

25. Smearing Nader detracts from an excellent discussion. Franks needs pressured even though
he's made some excellent calls...he doesn't take advice well or tolerate criticism especially on Glass/Stegal or derivative regulation...and it's not just coming from Nader but Voker as well. The fed needs regulating and audited and AIG and B of A broken up.

The Dems and Repubs are fighting each other, each trying to pull the public in their direction and Ralph is off staring at butterflies.

17. I loved that phrase Barney used!
I caught this live today, and when he said that I was literally LOL, hilarious.

And dead-on accurate, too, IMHO.

I like Nader, he's a great public advocate. He did us a great service going up against Barney and making some tough points.

Nader, however, is no leader, he's just not that kind of guy. There's no way he could win election, and more importantly, there's no way he could govern, he has no clue at all what it involves, he has the wrong skill set, and the wrong kind of personality, he'd be a total, complete disaster as president.

He needs to stick to what he does best, which is to be an outside agitator, speaking truth to power. Although I'd love to have him in charge of something like the FCC, or the new consumer agency Obama is said to be establishing.

Re Barney Frank, it was great to see him get challenged on regulation of derivatives, Glass-Steagall, etc.

14. Very nice
I thought this was a really good interview between two politicians I have a lot of respect for. I kind of which they hadn't made it so personal because they seem to agree on a lot of issues. I love Ralph Nader and think he is an amazing human being but there is no denying he is just a little too idealistic when it comes to politics. Now in some ways I think this is great and our government as a whole could seriously benefit from a little idealism, but Ralph seems to have trouble putting his opinions in a realistic context. I saw this interview as a good contrast between "real" liberalism and "compromised" liberalism. Barney Frank is a good guy but there is no denying that he knows how to play the political game even if it means doing things you may not believe in. Ralph on the other hand is willing to take humiliation and "irrelevance" in order to say what he truly thinks. Also anyone talking about Nader's role in the 2000 election needs to understand that mathematicians from Harvard did a study to find out just how large of an impact Nader had on the election and they came to the conclusion that he did not win or influence any districts which would have changed the total electoral votes. This also doesn't change the fact that Ralph Nader would have been an infinitely better president than Al Gore.

24. Great debate, good for Ed for bringing this kind of
political discussion to the airwaves. Both made good points. I love Barney Frank, he's a scrapper, and there's nothing more fun than watching him on the floor of Congress taking apart some dumb Republicans. But he's been in DC a long time and it's good for him to hear from someone as intelligent as Ralph Nader saying the things we would say to Congress if they would listen. Ralph asked the questions most of us would have asked. And he had done his homework, he knew how Barney had voted and was informed on all the legislation including loopholes that Congress often leaves open, most likely deliberately.

I would like to hear Barney's response to Ralph's last statement about the loopholes. But couldn't find Part 11. That is a very important question and Congress needs to know they are being watched and cannot get away with leaving doors open for corruption.

This is a role Nader could play. Barney is used to being attacked, especially by Republicans. I think he loves the fight, even loves taking on the wingnuts like O'Reilly.

Compare this debate to anything seen on Fox or even CNN. I would pay for cable if this was the kind of intelligent discussion we could expect.
