A must watch video to understand where we really stand with the 'public option' - funny & effective use of props...

Rachel states the progressives next goal....Pubic Option for EVERYONE!

Worth the five minutes and thirty seven seconds!

(And, K & R to keep this simple yet profound explanation of the public option in the radar screen - THANKS)

1. This was a good explaination but I wish when she talked about states opting

out, she would have also explored the political ramifications of the states that opt out in spite of the public wanting the public option.

Also, doesn't the public option have a 1 year term where states must offer it before opting out? Because I'd like to see the repubs try and take it away from a state once the people have figured out it actually works for them.

I agree that this is a conservative solution, but I think considering what we're up against with the insurance industry, it is a very good start. Once the cats out of the bag, good luck getting it to go back in...

25. K&R ?
Edited on Tue Oct-27-09 11:53 PM by Techn0Girl
K&R is a way that someone, without the ability to say anything substantive in the conversation, can leave a message and pretend that they contributed something.

Imagine having a group discussion and someone makes a long, well thought out argument about an issue. When it comes your turn to say something you say, "Me too!"

Yeah.

27. thank you so much; very kind of you, and very impressive mind-reading too
I think if you ask people who have read my opinions over the past couple of years, they will verify that I do indeed, lack the ability to add anything substantive to the discussions of various issues here on DU as well as in conversation with my progressive friends. But I do love pretending that I've contributed something . And yes, "me too" is about as profound as I get...Once again, let me conclude with saying how duly impressed I am at your obviously profound psychic abilities . You have me pegged to a "T" in just one momentary interaction on an internet discussion board.

29. as opposed to posting a negatively sarcastic assholey reply? Yeah.
it also boosts a post up on the page so more may see it, and those getting enough recs go to greatest page for a day, and a poster can scan down the recs column to see what others think important enough to rec. Just in case you are truly ignorant. Just in case.

17. THIS is what we are being allowed to beg for....
...a handful of crumbs thrown to a few peasants for diversion while Mega-Billions of Public Money is transfered to the For Profit Health Insurance Industry.

This is NOT Health Care Reform.

It IS a Health Insurance Industry Profit Enhancement Bill.

20. yep,
if this is what the bill ultimately ends up being, then I will be calling my congressmen and asking them to vote no on this bill.
The insurance mandate is not worth the crumbs being offered in return.
This bill so far is a scam.

22. Wonderful summary!
I love Rachel. She's awesome. I thought this was a very informative, simple assessment of the various flavors of public option.

What we got does exactly what I've said all along:

Our government is never going to allow a government-run, non-profit health insurance plan to exist that competes with private health insurance in any meaningful way.

NEVER.

If they made a truly open public option that anyone could sign up for people would flee private insurance in droves and it would destroy the health insurance industry and put tens of thousands of people out of work, and destroy hundreds of millions, or even billions in investments.

So they are doing everything they can to make sure that if there has to be a public option you:

A) won't be allowed to sign up for it.

-or-

B) it will be kept so expensive that unless you are poor enough to qualify for government subsidies it won't be a better deal than private insurance.

And you can take that to the bank.

Our government, who is busy plugging every hole in the dike of this failing economy, is not going to destroy a multi-billion dollar industry.
