Those that run the oil companies (and health insurance companies, and big box stores, etc.) are probably no better or worse, individually, than other, less wealthy folks, but the horrors that they over-see are the result of the economic system which operates them. Yes, the people are dominated by the economic system, not the reverse.
Our economic system, capitalism, is dependent upon the constant drive for ever greater and greater profit. To get that profit, they need cheap energy, which oil has been for the last hundred years. Having invested so much money in the oil industry, the capitalist companies cannot afford to invest in cleaner fuels, like wind, sun and hydrogen, or they will lose their precious profit.
The only way to end capitalism's wanton destruction of the earth for its profits is to end the capitalist economic system and replace it with a system that puts human values, which includes preserving our planet, ahead of private profits.
The Republicans have successfully demonized socialism, but a human values-based, democratic socialism is the only solution to ending the exploitation of the majority of the world's peoples and all its precious resources.
I am living in Venezuela, which is trying hard to transform itself into that human values-based democratic socialist society. I'm here and can see that it is hard work, but it is working. Poverty and illiteracy have been halved, decent working conditions,a living wage, universal access to health care and free education are constitutional rights, and all of this is being implemented by the democratic vote of the citizens at all levels of the society, from the communal councils, such as that in my apartment complex to the country's National Assembly of representatives.
We all must support the efforts of the Venezuelan government and other countries like Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Argentina to end the capitalist economic system and build a system which puts the needs and dreams of human beings ahead of the systemic greed for private profits.
