I had what I think was a partially torn rotator cuff from bench pressing about ten years ago. The Dr. told me an MRI would be $1,000, surgery would be thousands more, if necessary, and I had no insurance. I toughed it out for six months and my shoulder gradually got mostly better. I still couldn't throw or lift weights, swing a bat or a raquet. Even trying to bodysurf was too painful. I thought I would need surgery to ever do anything athletic again, and weightlifting and fun, active stuff is a huge part of my life. One problem is that rotator cuff surgery is often unsuccessful and even if it succeeds it leaves the rotator cuff even more prone to injury than before. A friend finally convinced me to try taking glucosamine sulfate and chondroitin sulfate. I had been skeptical because back then the research was mixed (today, Glucosamine/chondroitin studies have shown definite benefit). At first I didn't take the advice, but the next time we talked, he yelled at me to "Get with the program!" I bought a bottle and on my friend's advice I took a few grams, three times a day. Two days later my shoulder was healed completely. Today, I swear by glucosamine/chondroitin sulfate.
