(Russia Today Speculates On Why Assange Uploaded The 1.4GB "Insurance" File And What May Be In It)

The online whistleblower WikiLeaks is following up its massive exposé of Afghan War secrets by posting a mysterious, encrypted file called "Insurance". The file size is huge at 1.4Gb, about a hundred times bigger than most of the other files posted. But so far no one has been able to decrypt it. It looks as though when one posts a file like that he feels under threat in some way and, therefore, if any harm comes to WikiLeak's chief, Julian Assange, any member of the WikiLeaks team, or possibly even the site itself, the key to the file will be published on the website of the project and it will reveal some sort of huge secret.

More RT speculation on the file: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MvJXDTNfx24

1. You can't make this stuff up. Well, maybe Graham Greene.

2. I hope this insurance file, and we people of the planet that want these horrors to end, will protect
all of them and any others who are trying to use language to
get our needs met, not violence or weapons.

3. Language, not violence or weapons. This is and should be a worldwide mantra.

This is the mantra of those already killed and those who want peace.

Legitamizing war can't go on forever. We were not designed to keep killng each other. We were given heart, soul, language to evolve.

You phrased it perfectly, earcandle,

language, not violence or weapons.

4. This isn't getting the attention I expected. It's really intriguing if you're into cryptography.

5. It would be wonderful if somehow all combatants, all nations involved
in war and violence would be more honest about what they are really doing.

I know this sounds naive, but in this age of phones with cameras and the internet, I would like to see it become more difficult, not just for the US, but also for the Taliban to hide the cruelty and human error that causes suffering to so many people around the world. Wouldn't it be great if the crimes of the war lords in countries like Somalia were posted on the internet for all the world to see. I think it would be good if more people were aware of the truth. When our government hides the truth, it makes it easier for other governments to hide the truth. In the end, everyone loses their way because everyone is trying to find a path in the darkness.

6. Assange gave Amy Goodman a cryptic answer about it
http://www.democracynow.org/2010/8/3/julian_assange_responds_to_increasing_us

AMY GOODMAN: Let me ask you about something that Declan McCullagh has written on CNET. He said, "Perhaps as a way to avoid additional legal pressure or punitive measures on Assange and Appelbaum, a few days ago Wikileaks posted an intriguing 1.4GB file simply titled 'Insurance.' It’s encrypted, meaning that if visitors are sent it in advance, Wikileaks would have to release only the key or passphrase to allow the contents to be read." Can you explain what this file is, Julian Assange?

JULIAN ASSANGE: Well, I think it’s better that we don’t comment on that. But, you know, one could imagine in a similar situation that it might be worth ensuring that important parts of history do not disappear.
