Personally, I always found it pretentious when a PhD insisted on being called Doctor. Now this guy is another level altogether...he goes to a seminary and he's a DOCTOR? And he knows about the apocalypse coming vis-a-vis OBAMA?

How on earth do these guys even make it onto mainstream media?

1. The only people who consider this guy a doctor...
are people like the Oregon faith healers.

2. The real question
is why Huckabee is buying into this crap.

3. I tend to go with the AP Style Guide's rule: The word "Doctor" is for medical doctors.
All others get a phrase such as "XXX, who has a PhD in biology," and even then they only get that phrase if it's necessary to establish their credentials as an expert.

5. It is a title for a learned individual
Similar to "rabbi" in Jewish culture. Of course M.D.s want to claim exclusive rights to the term, and the AP Style Guide has decided to humor them with their rule. What about a D.D.S.? Different education, but close enough to claim that he is included under the umbrella. What about a Ph.D. in psychology vs. an M.D. trained psychiatrist? They may treat the same patients for the same underlying problem, is one a "doctor" and the other not?

The use of "doctor" in the interview is an obvious appeal to credentials as being a learned individual, but then you have to ask "learned in what"? Being learned in dowsing, phlogiston, astrology, theology, and other non-sense does not really qualify one to be called "doctor" unless you are a doctor of dysfunctionalities.

7. The equivalent title to rabbi would be reverend, not doctor.
And I don't have any problem with pastors, priests, or what have you insisting on "reverend." Totally kosher as far as I'm concerned.

9. Agreed
Doctor =/= Rabbi

Reverend = Rabbi

8. I call people what they want to be called
Basic politeness. But we don't know that until they tell us, so I agree with the AP style guide until I know better.
