1. Brinkmanship

The stuff he released just confirmed a lot of the whispers we've all heard about how badly things are going in Afghanistan and they embarrassed a lot of brass hats and government wonks who are trying to cheerlead this deadly farce of an occupation.

The encrypted file might just be more of the same, encrypted by Wikileaks, but held over the brass hats and government wonks as something else deeply embarrassing, embarrassing enough to destroy all public support for their war. I can't think of better life insurance than that.
