Researcher Arrested in India After Disclosing Problems With Voting Machines

* By Kim Zetter Email Author
* August 23, 2010 |

A security researcher in India has been arrested after he refused to provide authorities with the name of a person who supplied him with an electronic voting machine that was used to discover vulnerabilities in the system. The researcher had used the machine to demonstrate how someone could hack voting systems to easily subvert an election.

At 5:30 Saturday morning, nearly a dozen police converged on the home of Hari Prasad, managing director of Netindia, to question him about the source of the voting machine he received. After refusing to identify his source, he was reportedly arrested under suspicion of theft and receiving stolen property.

The voting system was allegedly taken from a storage facility at the district election office in Mumbai. It was reported missing on May 12, after Prasad disclosed on a television program in India that he had received a machine from an anonymous source. It’s not clear why it took authorities so long to act on the report, but the arrest comes about a week after two representatives of the India Election Commission got into a heated debate about the country’s machines, during a panel discussion at an electronic voting conference (.mp3) in Washington, D.C.

Following that discussion, 28 computer security researchers signed a letter to India’s election commission (.pdf) stating that the country’s voting machines “do not today provide security, verifiability, or transparency adequate for confidence in election results.”

1. A brave man! i salute him!
Its a good thing that he was able to highlight this deficiency. His arrest is probably due to some politician trying to cover his a**
but the good thing about democracies is that he will probably be out in a few hours...given how publicized this news got

4. A computer expert demonstrated how our machines could be hacked and his work was stolen by the candi
candidate who got elected after stealing this guy's research. They've gotten away with it for two election cycles now but were trying to be discreet. This election cycle should be the worst to date.

7. I'm tellin' ya...
...Georgia ended up with Saxby Chambliss rather than Max Cleland, and a Goober of a Governor, Sonny Perdue rather than Roy Barnes back in the '02 election thanks to our converting to Diebold, all-electronic, voting machines (the first state to do so)...and the Democrats here are too damn timid to even mention it, let alone go after it.

Jon Stewart and TDS crew said it best (although they were talking about FauxNews - it goes for all Republicans as far as I'm concerned)...there are only two possible explanations for why they act the way they do, they're either monumentally stupid or monumentally evil. I contend that it's both - evil at the top and stupid at the bottom. Those that are willing to do anything, try any dirty trick to gain power and the keys to the treasury, and those that help them do it through hatred and prejudice.

AS Alan Grayson says, this election, and indeed every election from now on, will be a choice of 'us versus them'...'we' want a good life for ourselves and our children, quality education, affordable healthcare for all, affordable housing and security in our old age...'they' want to destroy government, have cheap labor, welcome poverty for many, seek wars without end, burn the planet, leave the old and sick helpless and excuse oil in the Gulf - and why, because they're evil and stupid, dammit.

Republican holding public office anywhere in the U.S. That includes the Bible Belt!

12. Let me put it this way....There would absolutley be a lot fewer slimy republicans in office!
Edited on Tue Aug-24-10 02:12 PM by GreenTea
A LOT FEWER!!

The republicans are going to steal Alan Grayson seat in Florida - and of course in other other district all around the country as they always have, ESPECIALLY SINCE 2000 - WHEN THE EASILY HACKABLE ELECTRONIC VOTING MACHINES STARTED REALLY BEING THE ONLY WAY REPUBLICANS WANT THE COUNTRY TO "VOTE" - NO PAPER TRAILS....REMEMBER THAT BULLSHIT REPUBLICAN LEGISLATION "HELP AMERICA VOTE ACT (HAVA) PASSED BY REPUBLICANS IN 2002?

Democrats have their heads up their ass for years and don't want to see nor admit the obvious! - STUPID DEMS JUST REFUSE TO BELIEVE THE FACTS ABOUT THESE MACHINES AND JUST IGNORE THE OBVIOUS!

There is absolutely no denying that Karl Rove & republicans will steal many house seats around the country, via easily hackable electronic voting machines....Rove knows in order to steal the race all they have to do is keep it close....the republican at the top know they have already have the house in 2011 with the help of stolen elections,

The republicans will keep the charade going to the end, they have only gotten better at it through the years....but once a race is stolen it's impossible to get it reversed. Republicans will scream sour-grapes, and "no way it was fair' and not many will listen nor care , especially not the mainstream media who as always will absolutely ignore the obvious discrepancies and voting manipulations....So basically the republicans can blatantly get caught and still put the stolen seats in republicans hands and NOTHING will happen to them and nothing can stop them - Rove knows this very, very well - Count on it it happening as sure as you are about anything.

18. The biggest threat to democracy is
A hacked voting machine. We went though 8 years of Bush..when it didn't have to happen. Now we have to protect it again, and hopefully make sure the vote is not threatened.

26. Here is my scenario. All during the Clinton and Bush administration, the Democrats who
Edited on Tue Aug-24-10 09:49 PM by peacetalksforall
appeared on all the Sunday shows, plus weekday were primarily DLC.

I've written my opinion in the past. There performances and persuasive abilities were milquetoast. I was never insprired by any of them from McAuliffe to Biden to Brazil, Pelosi, Reid, Dodd. Milquetoast and Republican LITE and Republican DARK.

From 2000 until now I have spent hours going back to one question and trying to find an answer with the passing months and years. Some tidbit of insight to help me understand why they did NOTHING. DLC and DNC and DFL (although I believe Wellstone spoke out).

I wanted to understand this. WHY IS IT THAT NO DEMOCRAT ever dirtied their little hands to take a stand for citizens and our vote.

I kept coming back to the only answer I could think of - voting is a State responsibility.

That means that they didn't give a damn about nationwide theft of federal elections?

Were they part of a conspiracy against us? Gore? I don't want to think so. Leiberman. I wouldn't be surprised. Kerry????? Edwards ?????

Conners tried, but that investigation he conducted just went poof. Roadblocks. Poof. Wrong date information. Poof. Providing wront addresses. Poof. Machines. Poof. Buttefly ballots. Poof. Hidden machines. Poof. Shorted machines. Poof. Foreign technicians working on them. Poof. MIT JOHN HOPKINS CALTECH results. Poof.

Kucinich tried.

I don't remember any of the others DOING ANYTHING?

And then Pres. Obama want Hagel on his team? How outrageous is that. The founder-owner of ES & S (or whatever his role was) - he made money on theft - that makes a thief? Right.

What piece of this do I have wrong?

Ten years of a thieving legislature because they never did a thing except mutter a few words.

Don't ask me which was the worst thing we did -

Invading and killing Iraqis.
Torturing.
Stealing our money.
Moving their money overseas.
Registering corporations and foundations outside the country.
Shipping jobs overseas.
Shipping factories overseas.

And they want our money and vote? Isn't that a double theft.

Completely in the hands of thieves electronics.
Covering it up by not doing anything.
Sitting on it.
Slithering by without doing anything.

My most precious possession is my vote.

Yes, please tell me what I have wrong in what I've written.
