A rally organised by TV personality Glenn Beck has been heavily criticised for being held on the anniversary of the March on Washington by Martin Luther King JR and his supporters.

Reverend Al Sharpton and other civil rights leaders held a competing event to commemorating that day 47 years ago.

Al Jazeera English's Monica Villamizar reports from Washington DC.

Here are their reports on BecKKK's "Teahadist Whitewash 2010" rally....

Conservatives rally in Washington

AlJazeeraEnglish | August 28 2010

It was labelled as a rally to quote "restore honour" in the US and one that was non-political.

But on Saturday, Washington's Lincoln Memorial was filled with right-wing supporters.

Tens of thousands attended a rally organised by television personality Glenn Beck - who's strongly conservative views include calling Barack Obama, the US president, a racist.

Also addressing the rally was former Republican vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

It took place at the same spot where civil rights leader Martin Luther King gave his famous "I have a dream" speech 47 years ago.

Beck called the timing "coincidental" - but critics have accused him of trying to hijack the anniversary.

Counter rallies were held in the capital - including one with civil rights leader Al Sharpton.

Al Jazeera English's Nick Spicer reports from Lincoln Memorial.

Outcry over Tea Party rally

AlJazeeraEnglish | August 28 2010

Glenn Beck, a renowned Fox news TV presenter, and other leading US conservative figures including Sarah Palin, the former Republican vice presidential candidate, are set to address supporters at a rally in Washington DC.

But the so-called Tea Party Movement gathering is being held where the African-American civil rights leader Martin Luther King gave his "I have a dream speech", which called for equal rights for African-Americans, exactly 47 years ago.

The place and date for the rally has been seen as inappropriate by many because Beck is widely criticised for his racially controversial statements. Civil rights campaigners are set to hold a counter rally in the district.

1. Good impartial reporting on their part.
Too bad they had to be told not to bring their signs. Beck et al could not trust them not to expose their bigotry as they usuall do, especially on MLK day.

They are mocking MLK. Just as Breitbart, Limbaugh and O'Keefe mock minorities. They try to hide their prejudices behind faux anger at 'issues', issues that usually have something to do with minorities. It kills them that they cannot say out loud what they are thinking. And having a black president has put them over the edge. Doing what he did today was meant to diminish MLK's importance.

Just so long as they know they have not fooled anyone.
