San Jose City Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio (a Democrat) claimed that campaign signs for Measures V and W (regarding firefighter/police pensions) were illegally placed on public property.

1. Well, were they for or against pensions? Was the dem removing or placing signs?
Explanations could be more informative.

7. The signs he stole were for preserving and protecting the pension increases
The million-dollar battle over a San Jose ballot measure to limit police and firefighter pay and pension increases erupted in a tense confrontation Saturday that ended with a city councilman returning confiscated campaign signs to an officer while surrounded by firefighters who accused him of stealing them.

Councilman Pierluigi Oliverio, who supports Measure V on the Nov. 2 ballot, was driving to a community center ribbon-cutting Saturday morning when he saw a "No on Measure V" sign at Curtner Avenue and Almaden Road on what he said was public property, a violation of city rules. Oliverio pulled over, yanked the sign, stuck it in the trunk of his silver Saturn sedan and drove off.

But Tom Saggau, a strategist for the police and firefighter unions' No-on-V campaign who was going to his kid's soccer game, happened to spy the councilman pull the sign on what Saggau insists was private property. He went to confront him.

snip

Saggau, meanwhile, can be heard remarking that he only saw one sign taken and was wondering how many more the councilman had confiscated. Oliverio responded that the signs were "all over the medians" on city streets; a measure foe shot back that it's the city code enforcers' job to deal with that.

5. What you are saying is NUMB. Research the issues. If the signs were anti-progressive and if placed
illegally then the guy who removed them may have a legitimate gripe even if he should have reported them to proper authorities rather than having removed them himself. People are not allowed to place signs in certain locations, and some people abuse those rules, especially right wingers.

9. There's something about Councilman Oliverio
that reminds me of Rod Blagojevich. Maybe it's the jogging suit and the coiffure. :smoke:

10. Busting the firefighter/police officers unions and raiding their pensions...
...a wet dream for Mayor Chuck Reed, also a "democrat". Trust me, Reed is no Dem (okay, maybe by today's definition) but he most certainly no progressive. He is against gay civil rights, against labor, endorses extreme right-wing candidates for public office (e.g., Larry Pegram, a virulent homophobe, for City Council, etc.) Oliverio has aligned himself with Reed bringing to question Oliverio's true party affiliation as well.

More and more conservatives today are running under the "Democratic" label as "moderates." It is pure bullshit.

11. But what can the City do about its $100 million+ budget deficit?
I've got a feeling that V&W are the only choices; although the "No on V" campaign has pointed out wasteful spending (i.e. the Hayes Mansion), right now those measures won't touch anything outside expenditures outside pensions.
