Talk about a man who should have the absolute last person to be given the job he was given...

First government posts

Thomas graduated from Yale law school in 1974 and accepted a position on the staff of Missouri's Republican attorney general, John Danforth (1936–). In 1979 he moved to Washington, D.C., and became a legislative assistant to Danforth on the condition that he not be assigned to civil rights issues. His resentment toward some aspects of affirmative action, combined with his grandfather's lessons on self-sufficiency and independence, had moved Thomas into a circle of African American conservatives.

Thomas's conservative ideas soon brought him to the attention of the presidential administration of Ronald Reagan (1911–). In 1981 Thomas was appointed assistant secretary for civil rights in the U.S. Department of Education. Thomas openly stated that minority groups must succeed by their own merit. He asserted that affirmative action programs and civil rights legislation do not improve living standards.

In 1982 Thomas became the chairman of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), which was designed to enforce laws against discrimination (unequal treatment based on age, disability, nationality, race, religion, or sex) in the workplace. Thomas served two consecutive terms as chairman, despite having previously sworn he would never work at the EEOC.

3. I like how she doesn't jump on and agree with anything King proffers -- she's
very thoughtful in her responses. Off to watch the entire piece. I don't know what, if anything, this will do to Thomas, but I want to keep it alive - I want him GONE!

Thanks for posting this!!

5. You know, in the neighborhood where I grew up the ex junkies and ex drunks were the
most self righteous annoying born again you could ever come across. It's so sad to see these same ascending to the highest levels of power in this country.

6. So a Supreme Court appointment cures porn addiction and alcoholism?
Is the reason Thomas is so quiet on the bench because he's drunk?

Is there porn in his office at the Supreme Court? IS THERE?

And having known a binge drinker and seen the effect on her children, I don't see the humor that you do.

In fact, Im glad to know he's not a prude.

he should have been rejected because of his extreme judicial philosophy not this. This is just character assassination.

14. It is NOT character assassination.
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 04:52 PM by Tx4obama
Character assassination is what Clarence Thomas did TO Anita Hill at the hearing and what Ginni Thomas tried to do with that despicable voice mail she left for Ms. Hill.
Thomas lied under oath and should be impeached ASAP :)

15. Thx for admitting that porn and drinking
shouldn't matter for being a supreme court justice. ;)

In fact for me it'd be a positive. At least he's not like Scalia, an Opus Dei religious kook.

22. Bra - fucking - vo!
There is NOTHING wrong with drinking or porn - even for a Justice of the SCOTUS.

That Texas fellow you've been conversing with seems to believe that drinking and watching porn are character flaws. If one collected all of the booze and porn in Texas and put it all in one place, it would likely cover the state of Connecticut 17 feet deep.

16. SO EFFIN' WHAT???
Last I checked (10 minutes ago), alcohol was still legal in this country and porn was still legal in this country and the use of either or both (individually or together) doesn't disqualify ANYBODY from holding a seat on the SCOTUS.

So, "Justice Clarence Thomas was a binge drinker, porn user" in your indictment-style use in the title is hyperbole - pure hyperbole.

Would you rather the guy was some kind of evangelical fundie campaigner AGAINST those things? Maybe that kind of stupidity goes over well in the Bush Home State of Texas, but most of the rest of the people in the USA want those things to be KEPT legal. Check out the 18th and especially the 21st Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America.

Clarence Thomas is an ass - and quite an ass he is. Unqualified to sit in that SCOTUS seat? Of course. Incurious follower of Scalia and Alito? Yes. Useless blob of putty as a Jurist? You bet.

A bad guy because he used to (and may still) drink and watch people banging on film?
NO . EFFIN' . WAY ! ! !

P.S. : What's the website policy on swearing in messages? Where might I find that? I tend to be quite free with my language, but I don't wanna run way afoul of the rules, hence "effin' " instead of my preferred "fuckin' " - especially in the Message Subject.

21. We all have an "ex" in our lives
who would be less than admiring if handed a microphone.

It's old news to me. However, I passed by the office's "sexual harassment" poster in the glass case today, and reflected on how Anita Hill's courage inspired the changes that resulted in that poster. McEwen's actions inspire nothing.
