Video description at YouTube:
This video was taken by the son of the man being subdued. He took it with his cellphone. This man was asked to leave the Solid Grounds Coffeehouse in Louisa, Virginia, at a public event for Eric Cantor. The man was sitting at a table waiting for Cantor to arrive. Then police asked him to leave and, when they got him outside, they arrested him, after an excessive amount of force, as you can see in the video. They came back and arrested the person who videotaped the incident, even though he was on a public sidewalk. They did not arrest, but gave a citation to, a woman with a small child.

The video shows the officers subduing the man, cuffing him, and then another policeman racing in and knocking the man to the ground.
Apparently, the event was only for Republicans although it was advertised as open to the public and the man on the ground had an invitation. Democrats had "Waugh for Congress signs" outside. They, too, were cleared out of a public sidewalk and forced to go across the street with their signs.

75. Agree ... and we've been watching this develop for decades ....
certainly with violent attacks on the right of the people to freedom of assembly!!

One kind of cruel and brutal policing on top of another --

and here we are now --

Looks like the 500 pound whale of a police officer may have broken this man's arm --

if not his ribs and skull --

And, why? Because a Democrat had the gall to be present at a Republican rally???

We are insane!!

There are now too many incidents where this is happening. There needs to be an investigation or this will continue to get worse.

45. I read somewhere about 18 months ago that many police forces in the country
were participating in training programs to mirror companies like Blackwater.

I knew then that any problem the people have with the 'peacekeepers' were only going to get worse.

I'd love to say I'm not surprised, but this crap shocks me every time.

My country is dead and this is some sick twisted imposter.

77. Going back decades, have heard KKK and other racists were being hired
by police departments -- look at what happened here in NJ with "racial profiling"

on our highways. They were put under Federal supervision eventually -- but don't

know what's happening under Obama -- that happened under Clinton/Janet Reno.

When JFK was killed, 50% of the Dallas police force were KKK --

When Bobby Kennedy was killed in LA -- 50% of the LAPD were John Birchers --

I'm sure there are going to be many jobs opened to the Blackwater merecenaries as

they return from Iraq!

Always someone willing to wear the right wing tyrants black/brown shirt!!

This man did nothing -- and shouldn't have been arrested -- nor harassed by police.

Trust there will be a huge lawsuit.

And, many some jurors will recognize that a 500 pound policeman laying on top of

someone is cruel and unusual punishment!!???

22. Nope not protofascists, full blown fool grown nazis
For years some of us aside from SPLC have watched these things growing like a cancer, when we spoke up and said nazis are in the US we were shouted down or insulted.

I have been watching this movement of Dominionism , warriors for jebus, KKK, white survival groups and the back and forth flow between the groups since they share so much in common they are almost a common group in that they want to overthrow our democracy aided and abetted by funding from corporates (I have no proof, but how the hell can a bunch of lower income folks get all those weapons and armaments?). Make no mistake they are armed with quite an arsenal, at least a number made claims, with detailed descriptions of rpg, various heavy machine guns, uzis..
And stop and think how many of those our armed forces are training with the idea that they will overthrow the civilian government and install a theocracy which as you and I know will really just be corporatocracy in disguise. The evilgelical movement in all its forms disturbs me greatly, the evilgelical movement in our armed forces freeks me out.

I went to the churches, and spied on some meetings. I have been well away from all that since I saw a survivalist type overlap group out in the everglades with DEA agents and Columbian offloading a plane load of cocaine. I left that area about 2 wks later and have not been anywhere near them.
Hell we made sure that the county we moved to did NOT have any hate groups.

64. Cantor should be ashamed.
He is Jewish and these tactics should be abhorent to him. I can't believe this is taking place in this country. I am astonished at the insulted look you get when you point out this is the same kind of behavior Nazi's used in the beginning of their takeover. It IS the same methodology. I don't care what Jon Stewart says; it's not hysterical to make the comparison.

stolen elections and lies --

This has been out in the open violence since the coup on JFK in '63 --

with no government and no free press left to say so!!

"The myth of a free press died with the assassination of Pres. John F. Kennedy."

It was, of course, also a coup on our "people's" government !!

62. Me, too. As a vet and a Republican I cannot believe what I see going on in campaigns by alleged Gop
candidates. What makes Pallin a Republican? Or O'Donnel? Or Rand Paul???? or Palandino? These are greedy selfish dolts who don't even understand they are stalking dogs for plutocrats and "business" interests, a lot of them offshore. If I hear one more teabagger claim to be a Republican, I will vote a straight Dem ticket. As it is I haven't been able to vote Gop for the last three Presidential elections and my congressman (Conway), while a nice guy who did support the banking bailout but is otherwise mostly a teabagger and my senator (Cronyn) will never ever get my vote. And haven't yet gotten one from me. At least Conway does personaly respond to my e-mails and gives me answers. I don't like his answers and common courtesy is too low of a bar for me to support him.

Thank you for the invite. I heard good things about Minneapolis St.Paul, and I'd love to visit, if circumstances permit. But we have our own whack-jobs, that need tending in Pitt. (Recent spate of Beck teabagger shootings, and Khristian Identity lurking all around the hinterlands. Plus, we have the sheiss-kopf Mellon family here.)

Pgh. anti-nazi slogan:
'We

Got a good beat, and it seems as effective as 'The people, united, will never be defeated', because at least it rhymes.

13. This is getting to be too much I thought we lived in America
but since this happened in Virginia we know anything goes if you happen to be Democrat.

On our local genealogy mail list someone posted a comment about income taxes, than posted an apology because they hit the wrong button. You are not supposed to post anything but genealogy questions, answers, or information. Before they apologized some people wondered by the posted it. A lister said it was probably a Democrat they'd do anything. Well right away the administrator of the list jumped in and said she had gotten over 100 messages of complaint to ban the person from the list. Most said that it didn't make any difference about republican or Democrat it was inappropriate to post a political message. Of course I un subscribed and emailed the administrator also, I was upset that it slipped thru. they did ban the person and she can't post.
They were thinking about banning her from all Virginia lists but only did the one county were she posted the message. So you see anything like that can happen in Virginia.

24. Louisa is the county seat of Louisa County, VA. The
county courthouse is across the street in the video. It's a town of about 5000 or so, mostly poor. I live about 7 miles away on Lake Anna, the second largest lake in Virginia, built about 30 years ago to provide water for a nuclear power plant. The two brown shirts are Louisa County deputy sheriffs the guy in the blue uniform must be with the Louisa Town PD.

Sorry if this is a little disjointed but I'm totally shocked by the video. I can't imagine what the victim did to get arrested. I have to go to Richmond this morning but I'll try to find out more about what happened this afternoon. I will make my first visit to the Solid Grounds Coffeehouse if I have the time and post the results of my trip if possible.

I've lived nearby and shopped in Louisa for nine years. Typical of very small towns in central Virginia Louisa is traditionally a farming related community with a heavy Southern Christian population of conservatives. There has been some mellowing of the population with an influx of people from the Washington DC suburbs drawn to the shores of Lake Anna in the last 25-30 years but politically it is rethug country. This area like most in central VA has been hit fairly hard by the recession. About half of the store fronts in the video are empty and the housing market has collapsed.

Anyone else live in the area?

same size as Louisa. Everybody knew everybody, so I'm betting the police knew this man, which makes this arrest even more egregious than if he were a stranger to them. I hope he gets the ACLU involved and sues them silly.

My dad was Chief of Police when I was growing up. I assure you he'd have fired those officers in a skinny minute (and he was a republican).

The coffee shop has a christian cross on its logo. I did a

she would be as welcoming to the Pagan community or any other

98. No kidding. Israel has to rebuild the temple so Jesus can come and convert the Jews.
Or some other totally non-Biblical horseshit.

Meanwhile, Arab Christians get their houses and lands stolen by Zionists in Israel the same as Arab Muslims, and the Fundy Con Christians don't have a bit of a problem with it.

It makes sense in CON World.

Fredericksburg. Have relatives in the Chancellorsville Battlefield area. I'm from Arlington, so to me Spotsy is a quiet little speck on the map. Very little traffic or crime, and the cost of living isn't obscene.

The whole county/city subject confuses me to no end.

If a man's arm is being held in front of him, how can he "put his hands behind his back?

I saw no resistance to arrest, I saw aggressive cops acting poorly. Any citizen can ask why they are being searched/arrested/charged with. The ACLU should be all over this, and plenty of lawyers might take this pro bono.

Has there been a serious drop in IQ points to be a cop these days?

28. It's building folks...
while some of the repukes are enjoying this stupidity as a tactic to get elected, the mouth breathing supports believe it to be the new way of life and look at it as completely legit.

we are entering into a new and very scary phase of politics.

I used to say, "ten years from now the US will be a very scary place" as little as a year ago.

Now, "4 years from now the US will be a very scary place".

Things will only start to change when the tea ball licking baggers turn on their own as not being "tea baggery enough".

Until then we are doing the (at first slow, but now picking up speed), slide toward fascism.

I have never owned a weapon in my life. I have nothing against them for anyone else, I just chose not to have one. I'm beginning to rethink my position on that.

36. Longtime police tactic: repeat loudly "Stop resisting arrest!" because that
carries a heavier sentence - even if you're not resisting arrest. It's unlikely, as the the kid's father was in a bear hug, pinned to the car, head-locked, then dropped to the ground and squashed by the massive sheriff, that he was able to resist anything. He looked unable to move in any manner. Lucky for him -maybe- the son's video survived both their arrests, and might sway a jury. But I wouldn't bet on it...

48. When the son objects to them blocking his camera
a cop accuses him of "cussing." It is clear from the audio that the son did not say anything that could be interpreted as a cuss word. And even if he did, when did the "no cussing at cops" law get passed?

Police are becoming more and more thuggish and partisan every day. I went to an Obama rally in Boston a couple of weeks ago. We stood in a @ fifteen-across barricaded line for 4 hours in a cold wind to get in. When they finally opened the doors (fifteen minutes late), we were told to walk in single file. There was a some understandable confusion about how to get from a crowd to single file but we were doing so in an orderly fashion. All of a sudden, a big fat cop standing at the head of the crowd went ballistic. He started screaming, with spittle spraying out of his mouth and his face all red and twisted, "Get in line or we can cancel this event!" It was so weird and over the top it stopped everyone in their tracks. Not only that, it raised the level of stress and anger in the crowd.

Don't these guys have any training? Fortunately, there were lots of Deval Patrick volunteers manning the entrance who were able to calm things down.

122. Not missing the point . . .
have always believed that police culture is misogynistic, racist, and thuggish. Those who don't fit in with that culture usually quit. My point is that they SHOULD have training in how to calm, not escalate, a situation. Their training seems to be based on physical violence and verbal intimidation, which only serves to make a potentially respectful and peaceful conclusion less likely.

40. "STOP RESISTING!!!" - the official police battle cry when Rodney-Kinging a person.
They had the guy completely pinned, and both arms twisted behind his back, then started yelling "STOP RESISTING!" How was he supposed to resist?

By yelling "Stop resisting!", they can claim he was fighting when he wasn't, be able to legally hurt him, then be able to charge-stack him and ruin him legally and financially afterwards.

They LOOOOOVE this shit. Ruining people gives them hard-ons.

Every time you hear a cop saying "Stop resisting!", that's probably because they're using excessive force and deliberately saying that to cover their asses. Every time you year "Stop resisting!" it's police brutality.

103. no vid of what happened before this, and he does seem to be resisting.
He says "this is not a legal arrest" or something like that, I believe. I am not defending the cops, who seem clownish and heavy-handed, but again we don't know what happened before this, and he does seem to be resisting (civil disobedience requires no resisting to arrest). Another question is, what if this had been a Tea Party Republican sitting in a small event for Harry Reid? Would we support his right to be there? Would we be glad that he was forcibly ejected if he created a disturbance? (I think these people have a right to be there but should not try to destroy the democratic function of the event, and when they do that is when the grey area begins.) Again, maybe this guy was peacefully attending the event and then physically ejected which led to all this, in which case the security and the cops are all guilty. I'd like to know more. Where's the regular news link to this?

a phony GOP town hall-ish thingy, let's say, with the intention of confronting someone there and disrupting what they want to do then one should expect at the very least to be asked to leave. Rosa Parks didn't expect to just ride unbothered in the front of the bus to her destination. The goal of protest and confrontation politics is confrontation.

109. the OP says:
Edited on Wed Oct-27-10 04:34 PM by DFW
"Apparently, the event was only for Republicans although it was advertised as open to the public and the man on the ground had an invitation."

If this was indeed the case, no one had any legal basis for using force to make him leave, and the expulsion as well as the arrest were illegal.

I think the lengths Republican candidates will go to avoid debate are well-documented nationwide. This is a point that has long been established. They would only preach to their dining room tables--anything with a higher IQ might ask a question they are incapable of answering.

110. since no one can tell someones politics simply by looking at them
I have to think that they did something to out themselves before Cantor even sneaked into the shop through the back door. The shop owner says he asked them to leave and he has a right to do that (which may be why this was NOT in a public place). You can get thrown out of a private business for any reason. And again, that is why Cantor doesn't have a real town hall.
