Well, the phenomenon is not really that new. I'm sure someone at White Star Lines tried to minimize the "unfortunate" news stories surrounding the "mostly successful" maiden voyage of the Titanic. After all, they did go on to build another of that model, the Brittanic, although to appease adverse public opinion, they added more lifeboat capacity.
