Almost 60% of teens think torture is ok! According to a Red Cross poll looking at attitudes US citizens have about the use of torture on enemy combatants. So is it a stretch to think that teens, who grew up in the last decade, in the George W. Bush era now think torture is an acceptable form of punishment? Newsweek's Daniel Stone weighs in.

1. This is our future generation?
I can just imagine what the future is going to be like...

Crowd control with these...and you know what? They will have NO PROBLEM USING THIS.

2. Of course they do
In the same way that an earlier generation grew up believing in the Red Menace.

Think about it. Teenagers today were between the ages of 3 and 9 when Bush took office. They grew up with torture being just fine. And with the education system in a shambles, they didn't learn any different in schools, what with the stress on performance on standardized tests, rather than independent, critical thinking. And if you think it's bad now, just wait.

3. Disgusting
Well, if it works when Jack Bauer does it, it MUST work in real life.

4. It's even worse than this.
Torture is, by nature, no punishment. Remember...torture used in the context of interrogation is not punishment. The government had never tried, let alone convicted, people under interrogation (in Gitmo, for instance). Therefore, it's not even punishment. This is saying that 60% support torture NOT for punishment. Arguably, after a jury convicts someone of a crime, torture MAY be permissible...think solitary confinement...or death penalty (which I think we should outlaw). However, torturing a person unconvicted, let alone uncharged, is even worse!!! I hate to say it, folks, but civilized society in this country has lost. Game over. (By the way, we are still torturing: http://www.andyworthington.co.uk/2011/04/09/bagram-and-beyond-new-revelations-about-secret-us-torture-prisons-in-afghanistan/)

5. Don't forget the rest of the equation...
Jobs are gone, so more will be going to the military.
The pay in the military is disproportionately higher than the private sector (despite what you hear in the news). There is a pervasive cleansing of those who hold different political views.
The end result is a military caste that is loyal to the republican party who now views those with different political views as the enemy or terrorists.

9. That's why we see photos like this one (graphic)

15-year-old Afghan boy is murdered by US troops who pose with his corpse after severing his finger as a souvenir.

6. Ironically, this 60% is about to feel the effects of our rotting, corporately owned democracy
and it will probably be them that feels the iron fist of authoritarian government when they object to their greatly reduced standard of living in the future. If this poll is true, their are millions of lessons waiting to be learned.
