1. just some comments
Good and bad teachers – statistically speaking.

All populations that have any form of measurable characteristics fall under the Bell Curve, also known as the normal curve.

For some reason these people seem to think that they can isolate the teacher population to say, the 90th percentile of “good” measurable characteristics. That is mathematically absurd. You will always end up with a population that follows the bell curve for measurable characteristics.

Just what the hell are these fucking measurable characteristics of a good teacher supposed to be? An awful lot of what makes up a good teacher is subjective as hell and cannot be measured in a fair and standardized manner. (See “management by visible numbers only” – W. Edwards Deming)

As a liberal, I think our society should elevate the teaching profession to a higher level of income and prestige in our society. At least they should earn the salary and benefits that would afford a middle class life style. My feeling is based on the belief that their most precious thing we have for our countries future are our children, and they should be given every opportunity possible to find life liberty and the pursuit of happiness. This requires they be taught to think critically. "Stupidity has a certain charm. Ignorance does not" - Frank Zappa

I’m afraid our corporate based system is designed to produce worker drones at the lowest price point possible. Teachers are going the way of airline pilots for smaller trunk lines – 3 to 30 or so person's souls depend on their professionalism and they are made to work unhealthy hours for less than $20,000 per year, probably without a lot of benefits besides. Personally, I want my pilots to be professional and well compensated, because you can't have one without the other! This is what we end up with when corporations have enough power to squeeze all the money out of the economy for themselves. Reminds me of what was said about my ex boss; "Urban thinks he's the only one around here that should be making any money"

FWIW.
