In this segment Keith interviews Howard Kurtz, who wrote a book called "Reality TV" that looks at the failures of the news media leading up to the war in Iraq. In it he examines decisions made by corporate owners and wimpy reporters and anchors who were too afraid to report their doubts...

NOTE: The discussion actually encompasses the media's "lay down" for Bush, beginning with 9/11. Kurtz's comments, given the slant and content of his columns, are surprising.

1. And Kurtz was a full-fledged member of that media, too

But he didn't complain. And unless his book explains why, or exactly what the "lay down" tactics consisted of, neither he nor the book is valid.

Not long ago, Keith said that true journalistic fairness and balance is NOT beating everyone with the same stick, but MEASURING everyone with the same stick, then beating on the ones who DON'T measure up! At least Keith admits that he participated in the "suspension of disbelief." Why hasn't Kurtz?

2. Kurtz, IMO, has shown clear bias for Republicans as "media critic" for the WP.

He's married to a Republican operative. That's why I was surprised KO had him on, and surprised by what he said. I haven't read the book, so can't speak to that.

3. That's why I find the premise of his book to be so weird--unless it's an expose.

I distinctly remember CNN being the first of the networks to start saying things like, "Yes, there have been some deaths Iraq, but we lost thousands of Americans on 9/11." And I wonder if Kurtz's book touches on the media anthrax attacks at all.

6. I posted about this interview in GD, I was very surprised

at Kurtz's honesty or maybe it is just the excellent job KO does at covering stories.

7. I watched it on "Countdown." DeepModem Dad came in...

and I told him I thought I'd entered the "Twilight Zone," judging by what Kurtz was saying.
