A Local 10 reporter was arrested at Miami Central Senior High School while he was on assignment covering a story about school violence.

On Tuesday, Miami-Dade Schools Police told WPLG-TV's Jeff Weinsier he was trespassing and that he needed to leave.

He was not inside the school or inside the fenced-in area that surrounds the school. School board police told him to leave and go across the street from the school, but Weisnier said he was on a public sidewalk.

Police said they were giving him a lawful order to get off the property and that he was within 500 feet of a school.

Weinsier on videotape tries to convince officers that he had the right to be on the sidewalk and pointed out that other people were on the sidewalk, but after repeated attempts, police handcuffed him.

The OP didn't initially paste some information, and you got all pissy.

Big effing deal. You made it sound like it ruined your whole day.

40. Mayhem at Miami-Dade Schools P.D. (Miami New Times)
Wed Oct 24, 2007 at 01:56:11 PM

The Miami Dade Schools Police Headquarters was under seige this morning. The morning staff meeting dragged on longer than usual. Channel 10 reporters flitted in and out of the decidedly shitty building. Secretaries peered out into the parking lot through the front door’s peep hole ...

Weinsier got busted, according to School Police PIO Ed Torrens, after police told him four or five times to get off school property and back into the “staging area.” When the officer took Weinsier into custody they found that the reporter was packing a revolver in his waistband – no holster.

“You’ll blow your dick off doing that kind of shit,” one cop remarked ...

Edited on Thu Oct-25-07 12:19 PM by 951-Riverside
They did not know he had a licensed weapon at the time of arrest. Looks like they arrested him for being on a public sidewalk in front of the school the gun issue came after the fact.

69. There is a distance limit
It's a federal law. So many feet from a school - no drugs or weapons. (I am thinking 1000 ft?) So he might be in trouble for the gun. BUT that doesn't excuse this cop. He was an ass and needs to lose his job.

6. That's bullshit. The reporter has every right to stand
on a public sidewalk.

This fat school cop (do you notice how the out of shape cops are always the worst?) had no business arresting this reporter, just because the school didn't like the fact that it was a negative story.

Freedom of the press....hello.

The reporter/TV station has every right now to sue the cop for civil damages.

13. Schools sometimes seem to believe they have their own laws
that supersede local statues and the Constitution.

A photographer at the newspaper I used to work for was once told by campus "security" that she couldn't make photos of a disturbance in front of the school while she was standing across the street from it.

Can't We All Just Get Along?

Now might be a good time to bring up the sheriff’s deputy who snatched my cell phone, in mid-use, right out of my hand. That was his way of ending an interview I was doing with a man on a street that this deputy thought had gone on too long. Because we were transmitting that phone interview live, as a report during our noon newscast, the last thing viewers heard was my voice yelling “Hey, what are you doing!” Click.

Back in the studio, the anchors explained to viewers that somehow the cell connection was lost. Back out on Pembroke Road, I was dogging the deputy up the street to get his name for some future action. The incident is all on videotape, as happens when news photographers are present.

That deputy's action was not law enforcement. It was bully behavior.

And in the bigger picture, this guy with a badge, a gun and the power of the law had just trashed the First Amendment.

Later that day, a spokesman for the Broward Sheriff’s Office graciously apologized for the deputy’s behavior (though the offender never did). I tried to be equally gracious, and chalked up his behavior to an emotional reaction in the hours after a colleague had been shot.

End of story.

Except it’s not the end.

That incident was part of a continuum of law enforcement officers acting on some preconceived notion that news reporters are public enemy number one. And I bring it up now because of what happened Tuesday afternoon...

of news story start with armed and dangerous? It's scary... loaded firearm. He must be a criminal, how dare him to have a gun. The day I read over and over 100 million law abiding citizens are armed and friendly will be the day when free press and more than a handful of true patriots stand up to this nonsense.

However if the masses don't know the First & Second in the bill of rights... Maybe I'll never see that day.

If this post offended anyone, I'm about free choice so you can go back and be good obsequious citizens. If "official authority" makes one happy and safe in this cruel and bizarre jungle out there. I fully understand it's for your protection and security. :)

32. I wonder what the cop's reason was for signaling him out while dozens of other citizens walked by?
This reminds me of an incident here in Kansas City (earlier this year?) when Bush came to town to attend a fund raiser and a swanky place in Mission Hills. We had gathered to protest on Ward Parkway, a street near the residence, and to jeer Il Duce when his motorcade drove nearby. Well, the KC cops were out and keeping us back--we were not allowed to cross the street to get nearer the house. Even a small group who tried to cross were subjected to angry cop threats. Then an older gentleman in civilian clothes came strolling onto the prohibited side of the street and stopped to converse with the officers. They were all smiles. I wondered how this man was able to stroll into forbidden territory unmolested yet if we had done the same, we'd be in a police car on our way to the station.

I guess the cops really do know who the "good" guys and the "bad" guys are...

55. I was there early that day and an Iraq vet was standing on the edge of the parkway
holding a sign that said "GEORGE BUSH MADE ME KILL WOMEN AND CHILDREN". A Mission cop drove by, slowed down and yelled "Fuck you" at the vet.

There were only about 10 of us there at that point. We all heard it and we got the number off of the cop car. We filed a complaint with the Mission cops. And we never heard zip about it after that. We even called the mayor's office. Nada.

Now please explain why a Mission, KANSAS cop was driving down Ward Parkway in MISSOURI and cursing at an Iraq war vet. It's been a year and it still just blows my mind.

I have no explanation. Maybe he was "backup?" I don't know what I would have done if I were there; I might have yelled something back and gotten in real trouble. I glad clearer heads prevailed!

I just don't know: it's as everything is building up...allowed to fester...building...just short of exploding now. I don't know what will happen when it does blow, but it will blow...it's just a matter of time...

I've never felt so uneasy...queasy...about the present and future of our country...and the world. It's like waiting for the other shoe to drop...a really big shoe.

I think it's because Mission cops are not very nice people, who threaten political candidates with arrest for handing out literature on public streets. I try to give them the finger every time they go by. I feel considerably more justified now after reading your post.

67. I know what incident you are referring to
I was there at that festival working for the Dem candidate. We were all appalled that the libertarian guy (sorry forgot his name) was treated that way.

My kids (they are in their 20s) were walking down Lamar a few months ago - on their way to HyVee. A Mission cop pulled over and asked them both for ID. My kids said he was an ass. They asked why he was hassling them and he said they didn't look like they belonged around there! And the clincher is this cop was black. My kid said he wanted to tell the cop that HE is the one who looks like he didn't belong there.

46. So much for freedom of the press on public property.
Stupid cop needs to go back to academy. He needs to relearn the laws, not to mention he really could lose a few pounds.

the company just put the word "Police" in his title.

on edit: i didn't see "school" on their badges so maybe they were real police... the OP says "school police" so that's my assumption.

any help on this?
