Watch the ice cover in the Arctic melt in time lapse!

Then tell us something strange isn't going on!

1. I assume that is a simulation???
Is the end of that current or a projected? (Not trying to poke holes, I believe it is happening. Just wondering if it is that bad already).

3. It is that bad already.
Check out the Environment/Energy forum. There have been posts all summer with maps/graphs/charts showing the record melting this summer.

It's bad. Real bad.

5. It is real
Actual decline in ice pack is comparable to seasonal surface melt extent on the Greenland Ice Sheet observed by satellite since 1979 and shows an increasing trend. The melt zone, where summer warmth turns snow and ice around the edges of the ice sheet into slush and ponds of meltwater, has been expanding inland and to record high elevations in recent years (source: Arctic Impacts of Arctic Warming, Cambridge Press, 2004)

2. wow, were those sat images over 30 yrs or so?
pretty amazing. Within the next 10 years the artic will tear apart and just be a series of icebergs, and soon thereafter ice free

4. Any idea what the starting point was on this video?
Also, the video next to this one in the list at the bottom of the video window is frightening as well. It shows a progression from 1990 to 2049.

8. the two videos
I think the first video is over a one year time period, remember the ice sheet expands and contracts every year, so it's not comparing the melt between summers. This summers melting was very dramatic and created a shock in the science community. For instance because of this years melting, the second video needs to be changed to 1990- to about 2019… thirty years difference. Top scientist are now thinking no summer time ice cap in as little as 13 years or so.

15. Yes.
When I watched the second video I knew that their projection was way off - it's gonna be gone waaayyyy sooner - but it was just wild to watch the projection.

It's freaking scary and besides all of the other implications, the thought of what this will do to all the wildlife up there just breaks my heart.

16. It's sad about the wild life in the arctic
But, this dramatic melt this summer marks a distinct tipping point in the climate world wide. This will affect your weather, your town, your back yard. The climate system is going through a hug shift because of this dramatic melting. As climate changes progresses, it hits big jumps, kinda like steps in a stairway. we are hitting one right now.

7. According to NASA...
"The 2007 Arctic summer sea ice has reached the lowest extent of perennial ice cover on record - nearly 25% less than the previous low set in 2005. The area of the perennial ice has been steadily decreasing since the satellite record began in 1979, at a rate of about 10% per decade. But the 2007 minimum, reached on September 14, is far below the previous record made in 2005 and is about 38% lower than the climatological average. Such a dramatic loss has implications for ecology, climate and industry."

9. Really this is greater indication that even our scientists don't understand how fast-moving ....
Global Warming may be --

Just trying to understand the many ways it can compound -- that we may even be able to imagine -- is so insufficient --

They obviously knew about the global warming model in the late 1950's . . .

Had we nationalized our OIL then and moved back to electric cars, we'd still have a future -- !!!

10. I think your right
The scientist underestimated the speed of Global warming. Scientist have to be very Conservative on their predictions, it's the nature of science. IPCC reports don't help as they are watered down by political pressure. The fact is Global warming is hitting us hard now, and it's going to intensify much faster than most of realize. We need to stop blaming ourselves for this and start blaming the inaction of government, and the destructive nature of big business.

14. suffer dioxide
Do you ever look at temperature graphic over the last century or two? In the 50s and 60s and early 70's, the planet was cooling, even with elevated green house gases. It was the suffer dioxide in the atmosphere (which increases the albeato affect). It also caused acid rain, and in 1976 we basically eliminated suffer dioxide emissions for that reason. Thats when temps. stated rising. suffer dioxide might be a clue to reducing the impact of GW.
