1. So the rumours about Bush were probably true as well? I think this should disqualify any
candidate who does such a thing. From the Debate at least.Has MSM commented?

56. Of course. If this had been a Democrat, though, they would run this clip all day.
Not that GE cares that much who wins; they more or less own both parties. They would rather have the Republicans win, since they completely own the Republicans.

And it will be erased and fixed and then replayed without the whisper to show the American people that it never happened. Just an internet hoax. "Those bloggers'll do anything to stir things up won't they?"

50. Why would Brian Williams have said that.
Look at the expression on Romney's face. He is listening and then repeating what he hears. The person asking the question asks something very different. Besides, Brian Williams surely would not have been whispering at a time like that.

we're crossing over into REAL tin foil hat stuff here. As much as I can't stand that phoney Romney (he, and his 5 military-age, YELLOW ELEPHANT sons, make me sick) but, how do we know that HE heard the whisper?

Isn't it MORE likely that a producer, or someone else, in the MSNBC Control Room whispered it without knowing that he was near an open mike?

38. Following developments here
ROMNEY WHISPER: Is Russert Covering for Romney or Himself?
http://afterdowningstreet.org/node/30432

UPDATE: MSNBC has given Raw Story an explanation that explains nothing, saying Romney's microphone was not working. That's funny: during the whisper, Romney's lips aren't moving. What difference would it have made in any way for his microphone to have been working or not working?

Romney's (or is it Russert's? or one of the other candidates'?) debate cheating may finally force this collection of evidence of Bush's cheating into the news. Why did MNBC delete its blog post about it (and the reader comments that preceded and were referred to in the blog post)? Please CONTACT THE MEDIA.

We know Bush cheated.
We know almost certainly that somebody just cheated in this latest debate.
We can be pretty sure the media questioners cheat, which - among other reasons - makes them reluctant to report on candidate cheating.
We can suspect that the person who cheated in the latest debate was Romney, but it could have been Russert or one of the other candidates.

If there's an innocent explanation, why the coverup on the blog and the nonsense explanation?

39. It appears Romney heard the prompt and responded to it
While the source of the voice is unknown, it does appear that Romney responded to the prompt.

What does not make sense to me is the general impression that Romney would not need help the same way Bush clearly did. So why risk the total blow-out being caught would cause, especially for what would seem to be a marginal advantage?

clarifying his question. Perhaps he mouthed "raised taxes" not realizing he could be heard.

Of course it would still constitute an assist, the implications of which would be vast. (Though, sadly, nothing new to DU media watchers.)

46. I think Romney was coached on Russert's Questions before the Debate...
Edited on Fri Jan-25-08 04:06 PM by Junkdrawer
The REAL scandal of the Romney whisper is that Romney knew the thrust of the question BEFORE Russert could finish it.

Transcript:

Russert: Governor Romney, you're a big fan of Ronald Reagan. Will you do for Social Security what Ronald Reagan did in 1983?

(Whisper): raised taxes

Romney: I'm not gonna raise taxes. What I'm gonna do...

Russert: Well Ronald Reagan raised the payroll tax and he raised the retirement age...

Romney: I'm not gonna raise taxes

The whisper was to Russert, but Romney KNEW where Russert was going before Russert got there.

Also the question was vague enough that you would have expected at least a momentary pause on the part of Romney, yet Romney doesn't skip a beat and (like you said) seems to know precisely what was meant.

It would be interesting to compare Romney's debate performance last night with his prior performances. This is the first debate I know of where he was considered to have "stood out." He also was the recipient of the most air time (by far, apparently). It's obvious he's being showcased.

Where am I living that these thoughts go through my head as a matter of course? :-(

48. Mitt
And nothing will come of this, any more than when Dubya appeared at a debate looking like a hunchback with that receiver under his suit, insisting that no shots be taken of him from behind, and pausing to listen to his prompter before every response. Had we had a real candidate, he would have insisted Bush take off his jacket and turn around before the cameras, and if he refused, demanded to know why. When that didn't happen, I knew Kerry had no chance.

52. Freaky but I really do think it's like a pre-loop
I've cut it up in my audio software (adobe audition), and the cadence of the whisper and part of mittens first sentence match up. I think what happen was the live audio signal was imposed for a short time on the delayed signal we normally see. The whisper seems to begin during the question after some clicking noise and what's heard seems to be the "-a raise taxes" of Mittens "I'm not gonna raise taxes" statement he begins with. The consonants seem to line up when the audio is examined visually.

It's not definite though. It definitely does have a strong whisper quality to it. I'm 70/30 on my theory.
