Back in the mid-80s, I was the director of a federally funded veterans educational support program (Veterans Upward Bound) in northern Arizona. The program's service area included northern Arizona, western Arizona, southeast Utah, southwest Colorado, and northwest New Mexico. For three years, my staff and I reached out to virtually hundreds of homeless veterans - mostly Vietnam War vets - throughout our program's service area in an attempt to help them successfully egress back into society. The overwhelming majority of these homeless veterans really didn't want anything to do with our society in general, government on any level - especially the V.A. - and simply weren't interested whatsoever in any type of help, advice, or support of any kind. They usually just wanted to be left alone.

One of the most extreme cases was one Vietnam Vet who a southwest Colorado veterans service group asked me to consult on. On foot, I was escorted through a very remote, isolated section of national forest service land and when we arrived near our destination, my guide from the veterans group told me to stand perfectly still while he shouted out a recognition signal. I watched as this combat Vietnam veteran emerged from the nearby dense woods and he then disarmed several dangerous/even potentially fatal booby traps that he had surrounding his base camp's perimeter.

Our program had a small number of success stories during my tenure, but this southwest Colorado veteran sadly wasn't one of them.

Despite Bill O's idiotic claims to the contrary, there are still way too many homeless veterans from the Vietnam War - and their ranks have been and are continuing to be swelled by Desert Storm and Iraqi Freedom veterans. -- Michael

7. I'm moved utterly K*R
This is an outstanding statement on the people who are homeless and a clear argument for doing
something right now. I can't say enough good things about it.

Thanks!!!

11. A very moving film.
I liked it a lot. If only we could use it for an action item of some kind dealing with poverty and the homeless, because it is sad, but it could be inspiring if coupled with an action.

18. beautiful work, seemslikeadream
You captured a very heartfelt sentiment in your video.

Although all of the video was very moving, two images really stood out to me and made me cry. The first was the one with a man snuggling with his dog. I can't tell you how many times I'm comforted by the fact that the homeless at least have these loyal companions. Companions who don't care that they live on the streets and love their human friends unconditionally. For whatever reasons people end up homeless, everyone needs to be loved.

The second image is one one man holding another in his arms almost like a child. Craddling him/her in a very human act of caring. Those two really hit home with me.

 for the beauty of this video and for the sadness of life on the streets.

Sonia
