On Ring of Fire, David Bender told Mike Papantonio that Bill Moyers was the one who was responsible for the controversial ad, and that LBJ was completely unaware of it, until it aired. It was aired only once, but scared people so bad, that we still talk about it.

Moyers regretted it later: "We advanced the technology and the power far beyond what is desirable for political dialogue. We didn't foresee the implications of serious messages in such an abbreviated form. Our use of the commercial was regrettable. The Frankenstein we helped to build is loose in the world." http://www.conelrad.com/daisy/daisy3.php

1. lowers my esteem of Bill Moyers a little bit
It was a cheap shot ad of the worst kind. (God forbid I should ever defend Goldwater at all, but it was a terrible ad, unworthy of the followers of LBJ, who lost lustre, when he was defeating Goldwater simply on the merits, without resorting to shoddiness). Even though it was a cheap shot, I still guiltily like the ad, though.

2. Goldwater wanted to use nuclear weapons in Vietnam. USSR retaliation was a real risk.

3. Mike Papantonio praised the ad.
He said he doesn't like wimpy feel good ads. If you ever heard his "Pap Attack," you'd know he plays hardball.

5. Goldwater spoke openly of a choice between immediate
and disgraceful withdrawal or using nuclear bombs to turn North Vietnam into a sheet of glass.

He was dangerous. This ad wasn't hyperbole. He only mellowed much later in life.

Of course, Johnson's carpet bombing wasn't much better. However, the Soviets didn't retaliate for conventional death. Nuclear death would have had them do so.

6. That was a great ad; one of the best ever
I don't care who made it.

The other great one from the 60s was the anti-pollution ad with the Indian and the tear. Do you remember that one?

7. Oh yeah. I will always remember that one. It had such a great
message, and I don't have any data, but I suspect it was highly effective. When I was little, people use to throw their trash out of their car windows. No more.

8. For the books, the Indian turned out to be an Italian - can't remember his name.
