Obama’s Chief Strategist David Axelrod on Michelle Obama’s Remarks:“Anyone who heard her remarks…would understand that she was commenting on our politics” — not on America itself.
He said that anyone who watched the Obamas over time would not say “These folks are not proud Americans. These folks are not patriotic Americans.”
Axelrod called Michelle Obama a “genuine, good, positive person,” and minimized the possible political damage her remarks could cause, saying, “This is a new year, there’s a new sense out there,” in which such political tactics will not work, he believes.
Still, he acknowledged that in previous presidential elections, such remarks have created trouble for those who utter them: “People can play games. I understand that that is the coin of the realm in American politics.”
But, he concluded: “I am not concerned about someone misconstruing what she said to score political points.”
