1. I don't hear it that way.
I hear "For the first time in my adult lifetime, I'm really proud of my country..."

5. Michelle's "really proud" now
Edited on Tue Feb-19-08 06:03 PM by slosteve
I clearly heard Michelle Obama say she's "really proud of my country." I take her saying she's "really proud" to mean she's more, extra, or very proud now. Her pride of country is higher intensity now. I didn't hear that is the only, or first, time she's been proud of her country. There was no gaffe to my ears to hear her have greater pride about her country now than at other times she was proud of her country too.

2. Sorry, but she says 'for the first time in my adult lifetime I feel proud ... "
And it's a gaffe. Maybe she meant something other than how it sounded ... something like "I'm proud of the American people for standing up" ... but that is not how it comes off.

3. "I'm really proud" means "very" proud
"For the first time...I'm really proud..." Clearly does not mean "for the first time, I'm proud".
She is saying "for the first time, I'm REALLY proud". She is simply saying she is very proud. Jeeez.

I'm really hungry = I'm very hungry
I'm really stupid = I'm very stupid
I'm really angry = I'm very angry
I'm really SICK of Clinton's Rovian tactics = I'm very SICK of Clinton's Rovian tactics.

Next I suppose Hillary will show up in a Mean Jean Schmidt red-white & blue outfit.

9. Why are you bashing Hillary?
She hasn't said SHIT about this one way or another, and neither have her surrogates.

That's just some piling on crap you're shopping. If you want to get mad, you go on and direct your ire at Faux Snooze and some of the Murdoch papers for flogging this story (and Murdoch HAS endorsed OBAMA, so you go figure on that score), but going after Clinton with that rightwing Mean Jean reference is a --dare I say REALLY--cheap shot. Shame on you.

The OP's statement is seriously flawed. The word "more" appears nowhere in that sentence.

wtf?!- I'm really proud of my country because it's ready for change.?!#@?

Tomorrow is the future, the future is change, we are the change we have been waiting for, don't wait to change the future, the future waits for change, tomorrow we change the future, future change is possible if we believe, we believe in tomorrow, we believe that tomorrow possibly is the future that we have been waiting for, the possibilities that change has for our future selves is unbelievable, believe it or not the future is tomorrow, tomorrows future can change if we just believe, wait for tomorrow because I believe it is the future...blah,blah ..proudly we face the future tomorrow if we hope we can believe.

8. We know what she meant.
Saw a clip of bigot Hannity from today -- he's ranting about "how could she not be proud of our country ending slavery with the the death of 600,000 during the Civil War? How could she not be proud of our victory in WWII?" And similar BS.

I guess he thinks she's been an adult for over 150 years. God, the hate radio fools really tick me off.

33. You said it best!
We have a president that is

Allowing illegal wiretaps

Wants retroactive immunity for corporations who helped

Keeps a VP who participated in the illegal activity

Is building a missile defense system in Eastern Europe.

LIED to start a war and is trying to start another.

Has bloated our deficit, and

Ignores the will of the people.

And we are complaining this bitterly about these two candidates (Obama and Clinton)?

I can not wait until the primary is over. I am glad I stumbled onto this board but the ad hominem attacks on fellow posters is bad. What are we, Republicans (joke)?

18. Like her husband has said, words are important...
...particularly when they make you look foolish. If she had said 'In my entire adult life, I've never been prouder of my country than I am now'...that would have played. Of course, not being a person who's had to experience 'walking around black' in this country, it's hard for me to say just how proud I really might ever have been. But the fact is they're trying to win the Presidency and you can't make statements like this and expect not to be criticized.

34. Good point.
If you guys won't beat me up, I will be honest with you and say that being black makes it hard to be proud of this country... Also remembering that people define country in different ways. I am not proud of our government. I am proud of a lot of groups of people in the country, and many of the rest I just feel sorry for because I think they are used and abused, tricked and deceived by the corporation-represented government. But the direction of the policy of this government has not made me proud... But I still hold on to the dream of the Declaration of Independence and the Preamble to the constitution (trying to imagine they include me even though I am just 3/5's)

She very clearly states:

"For the FIRST TIME in my adult lifetime..."

in the clip enclosed in your post. If you cannot hear this, I strongly suggest cleaning the earwax out of your head and trying to play it again.

If you will not admit to yourself that she very clearly states "For the FIRST TIME...", then you obviously have bigger problems than I have the ability to deal with. There are people who specialize in de-programming those brain-washed by cults, but I am not one of them.

This guy comes pretty highly recommended, however:

what is clearly in the tape. It reminds me of the lawyer who was caught 'in flagrante' by his wife - he says to her, 'Now are you going to believe your eyes or what I'm about to tell you.'

24. Michelle is impressive, to the point, from the heart.
The parsing of her words and the absurd accusations are laughable. We are not so stupid anymore.
For the first time in my adult life I'm beginning to believe people in America are smart enough to recognize bullshit.

What I am proud of is Hope itself. Proud because it keeps us going, even when we are assholes. Even when we lose touch with it, it never loses touch with us. And I see it rising in this country these days; and that's exciting.

26. No, Michelle is NOT "unpatriotic" and she loves her country.
Can we please stop this foolishness. Does anyone really think that Michelle Obama has not liked her country until now? Oh please get real. Sure, her phrasing should have been better. Using one's brain and taking her statement in context (which the mainstream media of course did not do) it is obvious she was simply trying to express that she is uniquely proud (or uncommonly proud, or however you want to say it) at this juncture in her life given the mood for change and desire for national unity she is seeing out in the country. MANY of us are feeling the same kind of new and powerful national pride. Given that, I will agree that she and Barack should simply come out, clarify the thing in an open and honest way, and get it the hell off the table. Fine, she should have chosen her phrasing more carefully. So correct the record and move on.

28. Honestly
I don't think she intended anything negative about the country with her comments. I think it's just her inexperience coming through. On the other hand, her saying she'd have to think about whether she'd support Hillary if she becomes the nominee, well that was really inexcusable. It seems indicative of the smug, condescending attitude that seems to exude from their campaign.

I'm not an Obama supporter but will vote for him in the GE if he's the nominee. And I too hope they cram it down the GOP's throats. But I do see smug from the Obama campaign and do not see it from the Hillary campaign. Just my opinion and observation.

My wife supports Sen. Clinton -- so we talk about what we hope happens in November, rather than candidates. Truthfully, I would not at all be upset if Sen. Clinton gets the nod.

It's hard to understand others on this board who say they won't vote for either one come November. The alternative is a man who sings Bomb Iran (to the tune of Barbara Ann) and thinks it's funny.
