I was wondering what other Obama supporters might think of my idea that I passed along to the Obama campaign via the barackobama.com website. I forgot to copy it before sending it to them, but here is the essence of my suggestion:
Perhaps the most important thing a campaign can do for a candidate is establish symbolism to match the message that the campaign is trying to send. So far I believe the Obama campaign has done a masterful job with that, establishing hope and change as the symbols for the campaign.
My suggestion, which may sound trivial, but which I think carries a strong symbolic message:
Have Barack Obama talk about who would sleep in in the Lincoln Bedroom in a Barack Obama Administration. Let him say that it will not be fatcat donors, celebrities and millionaires who support him (as per Clinton). Instead, the only people who would be permitted to tread their feet and rest their weary bodies in that venerated room would be true American heros - the soldier who lost his legs fighting for his country in Iraq or Afghanistan, the scientist who worked hard long hours to help develop a cure to a disease, the volunteer who hammered nails to build affordable housing for Habitat For Humanity, the social worker who with little pay works 60 hours a week helping those in need, etc., etc.
I know this might sound like a very unimportant thing, but I believe that it would help reinforce a clear distinction between Obama and Clinton and sometimes simple things make the most powerful messages.
Of course, I received a robo response from barackobama.com and understand that considering that they must get thousands of suggestions every day. I wish there was some other way to pass the message on to the campaign and hope that perhaps some of them just might peek in here to see what we are thinking.
