So here is my question about last week's march on Washington
I have no problem with the protesters and if I could have gotten away I would have gone across the Potomac to join those attended.

So here is my question:

Can someone please explain to me that people were wearing all those crazy costumes?

I mean we are at war. Bush is an idiot and a tyrant...Right. So what is with all the whimsy? Sheesh it looked like a cross between Mardi Gras and Venice Beach.

If we are so angry and so mournful...what's up with all the frivolity? Doesn't it undermine our credibility and our seriousness?

1. I was there and there were very few peple in costume....
They did get a lot of press though. The VAST, OVERWHELMING, MONSTROUSLY HUGE majority were not dressed for frivolty and the tone of the crowd around me was stone serious.

10. Agreed. I was there as well, and saw almost no one in costume.
That's what plays on TV, though, and it's why TV is a DUMBASS MEDIUM to get your news from. It relies on VISUALS only, and if there are no visuals, there is no coverage, and if there ARE visuals, they are emphasized. There's not a damn thing the protesters could have done about it, and it is irrelevant anyway.

4. The press likey the costumey
If you had been there, you would have seen 499,900+ folks in sober, sensible protest against a fool and his tyrannical policies. But oddly enough, the teevee people and the newspaper people and the radio people all like to show the guy in the rainbow fright wig. They like to pretend that that guy is representative of all 500,000 people who showed up.

Now, why would that be? Think, think. It's a puzzler, all right.

Don't believe quite everything you see in the mainstream media. They have their own agenda when it comes to covering dissent. I'll let you draw your own conclusion about what that might be, but consider how incredibly well-paid so many of them are under the status quo.

5. costumes are worn for three reasons, imo
one - to get attention.

two - to communicate an idea effectively

three - a disguise. Not everyone wants or can afford to have an FBI file....

6. I should say thatmy observation is based wholly on the pics
that we posted on DU.

An people in costume are likely going to be photgraphed more (certainly by their buddies, but also by the media)

There are a few in costume, but you'll see the vast majority are ordinary, fed-up folks, just like you and me.

7. There is always going to be joy at protest marches, sorry
Just the joy of seeing other people who feel the same way you do is quite exhilarating. The costumes are done to gain attention and any attention to the cause is good. We painted an old school bus and it got stares and comments all up and down I-95.

There are always solemn moments too. But the joy comes in having a way to channel your anger to something that draws attention to your cause.
