There is a African American Ophthalmologist were I work. Some new co-worker asked me if I have eve
seen the Dr's schedule, since he works very hard. I replied that I had seen his schedule and that I thought he was a really great guy.

Now, with Joe Biden in mind, I ask myself, did I say he was a nice guy because he was Black or did I say he was a nice guy because he is a nice guy?

Hummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm?

1. Is it possible for a candidate to so ably put his foot in his own mouth as well as Biden did?
I don't think so.

4. George Allen did a pretty good job
But Biden's was much more nuanced.

2. No.
Not unless you actually said "he's the first mainstream African-American ophthalmologist who is a nice guy." Context is everything.

And now can we stop beating this dead horse?

10. I think Bidden said it wrong, But Obama really is the first African American candidate that
has great appeal to moderates.

5. "He's a really great guy" is not the same as "He's really great....
for a black guy."

Big difference.

6. Were you surprised he was a nice guy?
Given that he's black and all?

9. I'm asking me what I meant and telling you that I am asking me.
I don't really know my motives there.

13. As it happens, I was at a meeting last night - my team and I observed that two of the
people there were amazing speakers - one was African American, one was Jewish.

I'm pretty sure ethnicity played no role in the praise of either - they were both gifted speakers, in ways that most people aren't.

8. Did your co-worker sound surprised that "he works very hard"
If anything, I'd question that statement.

11. People who write threads like on DU this are asking for it
from people who can't wait to start an argument or throw out a smartass remark. Think it out before you write, because they are waiting to pounce.

What do you mean? I was asking the original poster a question.

Or did you accidentally reply to my post?
