A pair of guys expose the whole war on terror by talking about hair
I've just now seen the video of the folks in Boston at their press conference and how they talked incessantly about hair. This is about the best example of satire I've seen since Stephen Colbert at the Correspondents' Dinner.

No, really. Think about it.

A major disruption to a city, a possible terrorist bombing, wall-to-wall coverage. We here in the reality-based community know that it's absurd. But the press was incorrigible. And we were told constantly that it was a major, major story.

Until we see the reality behind it: a cartoon and a couple of guys talking about hair.

Isn't this the most perfect metaphor for the entire war-on-terror hysteria you've ever seen? Much ado about nothing. Less than nothing.

These guys had the most perfect opportunity possible. A mike and the world watching. They could have done what I think a bunch of us would have done and called for the impeachment of Bush, for an end to the genocide in Darfur, for action to address global warming. They could have done what I would have done, which is start singing or say 'Hey, I want to be a movie star. Anyone got a publicist?"

Instead, they managed, with their few minutes of fame, to force the world to listen to the same nonsense they've been forced to listen to over the past few years.

And listen to the press in consternation, demanding they be serious. This from the press that's been so hysterical, so easily misled and so eager to misinform. They've covered so much bullshit so seriously that they don't even know what to do with bullshit that's undisguised.

I really love these guys. They have shown us all how ridiculous we've been acting over every little hiccup.

Maybe now the media will learn to be a little more critical, a little more skeptical. Maybe they'll even consider asking Bush one of these days -- "Are you taking us seriously?"

You guys are appealing to the emotions of the crowd in this particular instance to hurt the rights of street artiusts by calling them all terrorists, which in fact Bush created a legal precedent for. (property damage "with intent to disrupt or cause fear" is classifiable as domestic terrorism now.)

As someone said, I don't like these guys, I don't like the service they are advertising (lousy cable TV -- although the show itself is ok) but I will defend their right to do what they did!

113. I don't BELIEVE in holding corporations "accountable". That is regulationist silliness
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 07:03 AM by Leopolds Ghost
I believe in Thomas Jefferson's approach, and the approach of the Populist Party of the 1800s, nasmely, eliminating the power of large corporations.

The more punitive regulation you amass designed to "contain and benefit" corporations by "holding them accountable" and "reaching a regulatory settlement that nets the government some cash thru licensing fees", the more monopolies you'll create and the less free speech we'll have. The end result is "state capitalism" where companies have licensing rights to post bills in certain places.

Regardless of how you feel about posting advertisements without proper licenses (or whatever the misdemeanor charge is to which the current felony bullshit will be reduced), it's pretty clear that these guys are a couple of hourly wage-earners that were trying to make a buck. A world of difference between putting up 8 electronic signs and sponsoring a one-minute superbowl commercial that, with air time and production expense, could stock a food pantry in a fair-sized city for a year.

They aren't the pin-stripe suited thugs you make them out to be. They are scapegoats, and should never have even been charged with anything more than a ticket. Is that folks seem to forget the cheers for those who were attaching Impeach Bush and other signs to bridges, above highways and on public buildings.

That breaks exactly the same sign posting laws as this does. Yet I don't recall any screams of defacing property and demands they be put in jail.

The hypocrisy is staggering.

If one is against the law so is the other. If one demands hard jail time and penalties, so does the other.

117. Not all of us have cable, but you wouldn't know it listning to supposedly "anti-corporate" DUers
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 07:27 AM by Leopolds Ghost
Who are not actually anti-corporate, merely old fashioned "Harvard/Pasadena liberals" who believe that as long as
corporations and individuals are both heavily regulated and
watched over, OUR version of morality will be legislated,
corporations will "wither on the vine" and a new breed of
responsible communitarians will rule society, making it OK
to spend all your coffee dollars at one company (Starbucks)
and pay for TV, just like the Soviets did.

Anything that does not involve Sovietization or Clinton-style
Pasadena progressivism, of the sort that led to Prohibition
and WWI, not to mention video game legislation and mandated
HMOs, anything not in line with that is dismissed as
"too far to the left" when it is really not even a left-right issue.

Reducing public liberty in order to "tame" or "get at" corporations
will only create perverse incentives for the big guy and leave
individual freedoms in the dust.

Just look at taxi regulation for a perfect example. Or other
regulations intended to quash corporate excess that have turned
into nothing more than a tax that excludes the little guy.

The way to quash corporate behavior, is to criminalize it.

Or better yet, simply stop giving corporations special rights
while removing the right of individuals (to post handbills,
to not be forced to patronize certain businesses on a list of
approved HMOs or "personal savings" fund managers, etc.)

It was stunts like this in the sixties that started to get people's attention. Like Abbie Hoffman and Jerry Rubin running a pig for president in 1968.

on edit: I'm referring to the interview not the poorly thought out marketing campaign.

40. hold on here
"Isn't this the most perfect metaphor for the entire war-on-terror hysteria you've ever seen? Much ado about nothing. Less than nothing."

Hold on. There are still people in this world who would be very happy if they were able to kill you or I. Let's not act like those people do not exist. 9/11 did happen and it was carried out by Islamic extremists, contrary to the opinions of some on this forum.

The problem with DHS and the Bush Admin is that they went way, way overboard in reacting to these very real threats. Not co-incidentally, they vastly increased their power over all of us in the process.

One of the many reasons I hate Bush is because he has panicked this country and when the next attack happens we will not be prepared because we will have had "Wolf!" cried to our faces too many times to react properly. It also shows how DHS and local police forces are generally clueless about what real terrorists are trying to do.

In the meantime I have to give up my toothpaste and hair gel at the airport checkout, because it might be used to start a bomb. Then I go on the plane and can order an alcoholic cocktail. With one flick of a matchbook I could make my own Molotov. Does anyone else feel like we're being protected by the Keystone Kops?

I thought the press conference was disgraceful. They seem to be self-involved morons and who have no clue that what they did had consequences.

I hope the Commonwealth prosecutes to the fullest extent of the law. I have sent a letter to Gov. Patrick urging this. I also hope they prosecute Turner Broadcasting for this idiotic stunt that was totally avoidable. Corporate negligence at it's wort and most insensitive.

The people of Boston might want to make an i-r-o-n-i-c statement back that says the same thing. When they go before the judge and prosecuting attorney and make a plea that this was all a joke, maybe the prosecutor should ignore them and start talking about getting manicures.

Sounds good to me!

We have these devices that we would like to attach to public infrastructure around town for an ad campaign. Is that legal and okay?

122. Give the cops the right to regulate speech, and they will do one of two things.
1. Flat out denial ("the signs are obscene and violate our overly restrictive, suburban-style zoning and subdivision ordinance which was put into place in the 1950s.")

2. Turn all handbills posted in the public square into advertising revenue for the police department and city, shutting out the average citizen. Saturation advertising in the form of corporate-sponsored bridges, etc.

They were mocking the press, not the courts. It appears they are making fun of the process, because they blatantly ignore questions. But that is only because we have never seen anything like that before.
My guess is that the judge advised them not to talk about the case to the media at this time. My guess is that the judge smiled when he saw the stunt.

The felony charge will not stick, as it requires an intent to cause anxiety or panic, and they're not going to be able to prove that. The prosecutor's abusing the law to look good.

Corporate greed-heads and fear-mongering politicians are the enemy, not the right of individuals to post signs in public. The fact that you're willing to punish them merely because you find them "distasteful" tells me you wouldn't belong on a jury.

Yeah, censoring something that vaguely appears to be the finger, but they can show dead 'insurgents' all day long on CNN.. sick, sick world of Media famine..

124. The whole point of the "hair" thing was to illustrate how ridiculous the media frenzy & "bomb hoax"
scenario was, and to mock the reporters for feeding this. They may well have been instructed not to talk about the case too, but they could have just said "no comment". This was much better IMHO for the reason I have stated.

Really they are pointing out, indirectly, how ridiculous the whole "terror scare/FOX NEWS ALERT/lunch bag found on subway/boogabooga" thing of the last several years has been.

And I applaud them for doing it.

123. Dirty Hippies.
No, actually, they are upper-middle-class trustafarians living in a wealthy city posting handbills for a movie.

That is not a crime and trying to make it a crime by associating them with "underground punks" who actually have LEGITIMATE ARTISTIC REASONS for hsanging art in the public square, and attempting to label all handbill artists, guerrilla marketing flacks, and wheatpasters as low-level terrorists is even worse than calling it a crime.

125. This thread just screams for the song
Edited on Fri Feb-02-07 08:42 AM by Caretha
It's been rolling around in my head since Thursday and the media circus surrounding this funnier than hell episode. This is for "you alls" and especially for all the uptight AH's and the screeching "hang em! Perverts! Justice needs to be done!" types. Enjoy :)

She asks me why
I'm just a hairy guy
I'm hairy noon and night
Hair that's a fright
I'm hairy high and low
Don't ask me why
Don't know
It's not for lack of bread
Like the Grateful Dead
Darling

Gimme head with hair
Long beautiful hair
Shining, gleaming,
Streaming, flaxen, waxen

Give me down to there hair
Shoulder length or longer
Here baby, there mama
Everywhere daddy daddy

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

Let it fly in the breeze
And get caught in the trees
Give a home to the fleas in my hair
A home for fleas
A hive for bees
A nest for birds
There ain't no words
For the beauty, the splendor, the wonder
Of my...

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

I want it long, straight, curly, fuzzy
Snaggy, shaggy, ratty, matty
Oily, greasy, fleecy
Shining, gleaming, streaming
Flaxen, waxen
Knotted, polka-dotted
Twisted, beaded, braided
Powdered, flowered, and confettied
Bangled, tangled, spangled, and spaghettied!

Oh say can you see
My eyes if you can
Then my hair's too short

Down to here
Down to there
Down to where
It stops by itself

They'll be ga ga at the go go
When they see me in my toga
My toga made of blond
Brilliantined
Biblical hair

My hair like Jesus wore it
Hallelujah I adore it
Hallelujah Mary loved her son
Why don't my mother love me?

Hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair, hair
Flow it, show it
Long as God can grow it
My hair

133. I can see by your sig line
that it's your nature to also connect the 60's - 70's music with the world around us. At least I won't be alone now, it will be a duo I hear singing insync. ;)

P.S. Whatever you do, don't think about Arlo Guthrie's "litterbug" song....Alice's Restaurant.

132. "FIRE IN THE THEATER!"
Who are the assholes that started the panic over the Lite-Bright displays? THEY are the ones who should be in trouble.
