I wish you were this irate when the Bush Admin pulled hoax terror alerts on NYC
Edited on Thu Feb-01-07 08:12 PM by Stephanie

Believe me, New York was in no mood to be fucked with, but that didn't stop the Bush Admin from calling a fake terror alert whenever they needed a bump. For instance, when they wanted to lock down the city prior to the 2004 Republican Convention, they simply announced that a laptop they'd found in Afghanistan contained maps of NYC buildings, including the Citicorp. They left out the fact that they'd found the laptop months earlier, and that the files had last been opened four years prior. So that was enough reason to lock down the city, close midtown for a few days, and put us all on high alert until the convention was over. That justified extreme police measures, unjustified arrests, and illegal imprisonments (the NYCLU sued) to protect the Coward-in-Chief while he was here exploiting our heartbreak for his political advantage.

So Boston, I feel your pain. It sucks to be frightened for no reason. Not to mention the inconvenience, and the cost. But you are not the first city to go through it. We've been living with it on a regular basis for the last six years (remember anthrax?). But in our case the perpetrators were not some crazy artists, but the President of the United States and his enablers. And that's not even funny.

The scare dovetailed perfectly with the Bush/Cheney political strategy. Indeed, the entire re-election campaign was a terrorist-themed event, with officials--including Ridge--stressing to reporters they were convinced Al Qaeda was planning a pre-election day strike inside America. To formalize the theory, the Bush-appointed head of the US Election Assistance Commission wrote to Ridge asking about the possibility of postponing the 2004 presidential election in the event it was interrupted by a terrorist attack.

Rather than describing the uncovering of a specific Al Qaeda terror plot, the way British intelligence officials claimed to have done this summer, what Ridge was touting on August 1 was newly uncovered and detailed surveillance intelligence showing that Al Qaeda members had been casing the World Bank headquarters in Washington, the Citicorp building in New York City and the Prudential financial headquarters in Newark, New Jersey. What Ridge failed to mention, and what government officials seemed to purposely obfuscate, was that the surveillance intelligence predated 9/11--which raised serious doubts about how imminent (or "near term") the threat uncovered actually was. (A spokesman for the World Bank later dismissed the uncovered information as being "largely out of date.")

Later when pressed about the gaping hole in his presentation, Ridge stamped his feet, insisting, "We don't do politics in the Department of Homeland Security." It should be noted though, that during the 2004 campaign season Ridge met privately with two key Republican pollsters, Frank Luntz and Bill McInturff, and took sixteen trips to visit ten presidential battleground states between late May and late October.

***

Not surprisingly, few of the sources raised serious questions or doubts about Ridge's handling of the terror scare. As for the revelation that the startling intelligence was actually four years old--a fact that came out days after the warning, thanks to reports in the Washington Post and New York Times, Time dutifully quoted "an FBI official" who dismissed the time stamp as "immaterial."

More outrage then would have been better for everyone.

Cheers.

5. besides being pointless those alerts cost a lot of money
fbi had to drop everything they were doing and go on terror alert. state and local authorities had to go on overtime and other secure facilities had to be locked down..even hospitals.

24. And that's nothing compared to what it cost for securty for the Republican convention
That was a multi-million dollar gift from Bloomberg to Bush, courtesy of the taxpayers of NYC. Many many millions. Plus lost revenue for all the businesses in the frozen zone, and due to all the people who split town to avoid it.

33. ... and a whole lot more
A litany of observable facts does not corroborate the official story at all.

It leaves the OCT believers in the same fundamentalist religious group with
those who believe in santa claus, a big man called 'god' who created the universe
not long back, and 9/11 happened because of a hermit in afganistan.

entirely betrayed by all responsible journalism.

11. Thanks for reminding me. There was one shortly after 911. Info from a con-artist
who was describing all the NYC landmarks as seen in the movies and saying they'd be a target. I even was a bit spooked then - but for the very last time.
And after putting us through that, we were deprived of money for defenses because - duh - not enough landmarks... yeah, we had some laughs since 9.11 - so the mooninites (which were in NYC too) not much of a problem.

And the other cities involved had no problem with the campaign, including NY. But when the word went out from Cheney et al when they wanted advantage the terror level was raised and the people trembled. I for one am tired of the bs.

13. Well they need to be prosecuted for it.
If the kids in Boston are going to be charged, then the Bush Admin needs to also pay for this crime. It cost us a LOT of time and money, not just for the police overtime but all of the lost commerce while people were shut out of their offices, etc. There's definitely a damages suit in there if someone has the guts to bring it.

I'm sorry you think we don't. I live outside Boston and like many here I have friends in NYC. No one ever stopped caring. The fact that Boston reacted Wednesday comes from the fact that we have not forgotten what happened to our neighbors and to a lesser extent to ourselves. I'm glad they investigates and glad it turned out to be nothing. I wish the feds had investigated suspicious activity before 911 and maybe, just maybe, things would have turned out differently.

19. Really great post. I've been doing some reflecting on Boston and NYC, etc.
I haven't jumped into the fray because I can see both sides of the story..albeit from the safety of my secluded enclave WAY up in Northern Minnesota.

It's always hard to walk in the shoes of someone else.

Thanks for the interesting post.

We all have PTSD from 9/11. Then they heaped it on with the fake terra lerts. On top of the political outrages it's become too much to take in.

I don't know anyone who can sleep. Moving to a new job across the street from the WTC has brought it all home again. I look out the window right down onto the site.

I checked out for a long time post - didn't you? It's not often thousands of people are murdered right before your eyes. We're all damaged by it. Hopefully just our psyches and not our lungs. But time will tell.
