Accused terrorist Salah acquitted of charges

February 1, 2007
By Chris Hack Staff writer

Mohammed Salah, the only U.S. citizen to be designated an international terrorist, was acquitted Thursday of terrorism-related charges - a rejection of the federal government's claim that he helped lead the militant Palestinian group Hamas.

The dramatic conclusion of Salah's three-month trial capped a novel-worthy story 14 years in the making.

Salah was captured by Israeli authorities in 1993 and accused of serving as a Hamas military commander, and he’s been dealing with the aftershocks ever since.

Salah, 53, of Bridgeview, was convicted of lesser charges of obstruction of justice for lying about his alleged Hamas links in a 2000 lawsuit. But he brushed that aside and basked in the glow of beating the main charge of racketeering conspiracy, which could have landed him behind bars for the rest of his life. snip

In an indictment announced in 2004 by then-Attorney General John Ashcroft, Salah was accused of delivering laundered money to Hamas militants in the Occupied Territories and recruiting a pair of local men for terrorist training.

1. So, exactly what is the number of 'terrorist' convictions our government has
achieved?

3. I don't know, but Isuspect Bush* will cite Salah
as a terrorist brought to justice in his next SOTUA. Just like he mention all those "terrorist attacks" they thwarted:

“We cannot know the full extent of the attacks that we and our allies have prevented,” Mr. Bush noted, “but here is some of what we do know: We stopped an al-Qaida plot to fly a hijacked airplane into the tallest building on the West Coast.”

This would, of course, sir, be the purported plot to knock down the 73-story building in Los Angeles, the one once known as the Library Tower — the one you personally revealed so breathlessly a year ago next month.

It was embarrassing enough that you mistakenly referred to the structure as the “Liberty Tower.”

But within hours it was also revealed that authorities in Los Angeles had had no idea you were going to make any of the details — whether serious or fanciful — public.

Who terrorized Southern California that day, Mr. Bush?

A year ago next month, the Los Angeles Times quoted a source — identified only by the labyrinthine description “a U.S. official familiar with the operational aspects of the war on terrorism” — who insisted that the purported “Library Tower plot” was one of many al-Qaida operations that had not gotten very far past the conceptual stage.
